‘REUBEN JAMES WAS A DOGGED FIGHTER,’ SAYS OBI OKAFOR

Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential candidate, Chief Arthur Obi Okafor SAN has described erstwhile NBA Third Vice President, Late Reuben James as “a dogged fighter for the downtrodden.”

In a statement made available to CITY LAWYER and personally signed by Obi Okafor, he noted James “worked with our now departed colleague closely on different occasions, especially as Alternate Chair of the Criminal Justice Reforms Committee which I chaired,” adding that the late Bar-man was “a perfect gentleman who showed great commitment to the promotion of the ideals of our great association.”

The leading litigator, who is challenging the election of current NBA President, Mr. Paul Usoro SAN in court, stated that James was a “voice for the voiceless and an advocate for the rule of law.” He added that “His demise is no doubt a big loss to our noble association, especially the Kaduna branch where he was a very active member.”

Below is the full text of the statement:

DEMISE OF REUBEN JAMES ESQ: A BIG LOSS TO THE BAR.
It is with deep sense of loss that I learnt of the untimely demise of Reuben James Esq., a one-time Third National Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Alternate Chair of the Criminal Justice Reforms Committee of our noble association, which sad event took place yesterday.

Having worked with our now departed colleague closely on different occasions, especially as Alternate Chair of the Criminal Justice Reforms Committee which I chaired, I found him to be a perfect gentleman who showed great commitment to the promotion of the ideals of our great association.

He was a dogged fighter for the downtrodden, voice for the voiceless and an advocate for the rule of law. His demise is no doubt a big loss to our noble association, especially the Kaduna branch where he was a very active member.

My heartfelt sympathy goes to members of his family, Kaduna branch of the NBA, his friends and associates. I pray the Almighty grants them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and the soul of the departed eternal rest.

Amen!

Arthur Obi Okafor (SAN)
