‘NBA Will Promote Electoral Integrity,’ Says Mahmoud

Nigerian B a r Association (NBA) President A b u b a k a r Mahmoud (SAN) has restated the association’s commitment to a transparent electoral process in the country.
He spoke at this year’s Founders Day lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) held at the Nigerian Judicial Institute, Abuja.
According to NBA, Mahmoud, represented by the First-Vice President Mr. Caleb Dajan, said NBA had been working with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promote electoral integrity in the country.

Lawmakers change position, kick against reframed election sequence bill

Lawmakers at the Senate plenary yesterday kicked against the newly reframed election sequence bill to pass second reading.
Unlike the first election sequence bill rejected by President Muhammadu Buhari, this new bill seeks to reorder the election with Governorship/State Houses of Assembly elections coming first, followed by the National Assembly election with Presidential election coming last.

Fuel tanker explosion on Otedola bridge, Lagos-Ibadan expressway

At least nine people have been confirmed dead after a fuel tanker exploded on Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that at least four others suffered from varying degrees of burns as at least 54 vehicles were also lost to the terrible explosion.

According to LASEMA, the accident occured when a Mack tanker truck loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell and spilled its content on the road resulting into a fire outbreak. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that the accident was due to a brake failure.

Telephone Banking Fraud: London Court Jails 5 Nigerians

An Inner London Crown Court has sentenced five Nigerians to various jail terms over the theft of £610,000 from business bank accounts.
Desmond Abifade, Victor Oke, Moses Kuye, Melinda Mensah-Oke, Arinola Kuye, were caught after being spotted by fraud investigators at HSBC, who passed the case to the dedicated card and payment crime unit (DCPCU) to investigate.
According to reports, Victor Oke, 39, of Galleons Drive, Barking, used stolen data provided by Desmond Uyiosa Abifade, 25, of Henniker Road, Stratford, to falsely impersonate company directors via telephone banking.

Prison Conditions and Poor Legal Representation

Many of the awaiting trial persons (ATPs) do not have legal or active legal representation and some who have legal representation are unsatisfied with the quality of service being rendered to them by their lawyers, Prison survey report reveals.
According to the report, which is anchored on a research on pre trial detention in Nigeria conducted by the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS) in conjunction with Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), with support from Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), United Kingdom, also indicated that many of the prisoners do not have confidence in the criminal justice system with the police having the worst rating from the prisoners.

Benue Attacks: Court Remands 6 Herdsmen in Prison

A Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Ajim, has denied bail to six herdsmen arrested over the New Year day attacks on Guma and Logo Local Government areas of Benue State.

The suspects were first arraigned on January 5 before Mr. Ajim, who ordered that the accused remanded in Makurdi Medium Prison till yesterday.
The accused persons – Ibrahim Saleh, Jibrin Adamu, Magaji Yau, Ibrahim Abubakar, Useni Bala and Sabin Yau – were charged for culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire, grievous hurt and violation of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017.
