The credibility of last year’s Council election of the Institute of Chartered Accountants is brought to question as two panel reports reveal evidence of electronic rigging
In May 2014, 28 members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, ICAN, were voted into the Council of the institute. The election and previous others conducted by the electoral body of the institute was by all standard unique. While some experts are clamouring for the adoption of the electronic system of voting in the country, ICAN is already ahead of the game. On more than four occasions, the institute has conducted its council elections through the electronic voting system. Through the system, members of the institute residing within and outside the country are able to exercise their franchise by using a dedicated Personal Identification Number, PIN, to vote. Most of the votes are cast in block as members group themselves and vote for their choice candidate. Impeccable sources told CITY LAWYER that emails were sent to the presidential candidates inviting them to the high-profile crisis management meeting scheduled to hold by 2 pm on Thursday in the President’s Conference Room. Other candidates are not invited to the high stakes meeting.
Signed by the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA) Secretary, Mr. Bolaji Agoro, sources told CITY LAWYER that the letter did not disclose any agenda for the meeting.

In Nigeria, it is axiomatic that when an accused person is found guilty of a crime, he is convicted and sentenced to a term of imprisonment and/or fined. In the end, one realizes that the main victor is the state, as one more criminal is taken off the street, while she, the state, is further “compensated” with the fine handed down against the accused person. Unfortunately, the victim of the offence, who suffered financial loss, injuries and/or psychological trauma, is only “compensated” with the fact that the accused person has been convicted and punished. The only option left for the victim was either to file a civil suit to claim for damages, or take solace in the cliché, “let the will of God be done”.

Over 40 jurists are expected to feature at this year’s Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch Law Week which kicks off tomorrow with a health walk.
Aside from the plethora of topical legal issues to be dissected at the two-day plenary sessions holding on Thursday and Friday at City Hall, Lagos, the Law Week will be garnished with visits to Ikoyi and Kirikiri prisons as well as fun events such as welcome cocktails, the “Ankara Rave” party and Elders’ Nite.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has bestowed an award on veteran prison reform activist and Founder/Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), Dr. Uju Agomoh.
The award was conferred on her at the recent criminal justice summit hosted by the NBA Criminal Justice Reform Committee (NBA-CJRC) at Asaba, Delta State “for outstanding contribution to criminal justice reforms in Nigeria. “

At least nine people have been confirmed dead after a fuel tanker exploded on Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that at least four others suffered from varying degrees of burns as at least 54 vehicles were also lost to the terrible explosion.
According to LASEMA, the accident occured when a Mack tanker truck loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell and spilled its content on the road resulting into a fire outbreak. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that the accident was due to a brake failure.
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN to immediately give legal effect to his presidential order.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, secured the conviction and sentencing of an Internet fraudster, Oluwatobiloba Badejo, before Justice O.A. Williams of the State High court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos.
The convict was arraigned on May 25, 2018 on a two- count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and possession of fraudulent documents to the tune of N124, 937.53( One Hundred and Twenty- four Thousand, Nine Hundred and Thirty-seven Naira, Fifty-three Kobo).

The International Criminal Court is moving gradually towards prosecution of Nigerian officials involved in the December 2015 massacre of members of Islamic Movements of Nigeria.
An Inner London Crown Court has sentenced five Nigerians to various jail terms over the theft of £610,000 from business bank accounts.
Desmond Abifade, Victor Oke, Moses Kuye, Melinda Mensah-Oke, Arinola Kuye, were caught after being spotted by fraud investigators at HSBC, who passed the case to the dedicated card and payment crime unit (DCPCU) to investigate.
According to reports, Victor Oke, 39, of Galleons Drive, Barking, used stolen data provided by Desmond Uyiosa Abifade, 25, of Henniker Road, Stratford, to falsely impersonate company directors via telephone banking.

According to the report, which is anchored on a research on pre trial detention in Nigeria conducted by the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS) in conjunction with Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), with support from Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), United Kingdom, also indicated that many of the prisoners do not have confidence in the criminal justice system with the police having the worst rating from the prisoners.

A Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Ajim, has denied bail to six herdsmen arrested over the New Year day attacks on Guma and Logo Local Government areas of Benue State.
The suspects were first arraigned on January 5 before Mr. Ajim, who ordered that the accused remanded in Makurdi Medium Prison till yesterday.
The accused persons – Ibrahim Saleh, Jibrin Adamu, Magaji Yau, Ibrahim Abubakar, Useni Bala and Sabin Yau – were charged for culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire, grievous hurt and violation of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017.
