Retired judge of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal, Justice Obietonbara Daniel-Kalio has heaped high praise on the immediate past chairman of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt Branch, Mrs. Cordelia Uwuma Eke following the public presentation of her latest book on criminal appeals.
In a Foreword seen by CITY LAWYER, Justice Daniel-Kalio described Eke as “very knowledgeable in the appeal process, particularly criminal appeals, having prosecuted several appeals both as a private legal practitioner and at the Official Bar.”
Noting that he had gone through the book titled RUDIMENTS OF CRIMINAL APPEALS, the retired judge stated that “as one very familiar with appeals, what I find particularly useful and refreshing about it is the practical step-by-step exposition of what is required to file and smoothly see to a proper prosecution, progression and conclusion of an appeal in a criminal case whether the appeal is an interlocutory one or an appeal in a matter that has been finally determined by a Court of law, and also, notwithstanding the Court from which the appeal emanates or lies.”

He also stated that “what I find particularly useful and refreshing about it is the practical step-by-step exposition of what is required to file and smoothly see to a proper prosecution, progression and conclusion of an appeal in a criminal case whether the appeal is an interlocutory one or an appeal in a matter that has been finally determined by a Court of law, and also, notwithstanding the Court from which the appeal emanates or lies.”
The judge noted that the book is “refreshingly devoid of the tedium of the grandiloquent, thus making for an easy understanding of the appeal process both to a wide-eyed greenhorn or to one already familiar with the appeal process.”
Saying that he considers the book as “very useful,” Justice Daniel-Kalio recommended it “every legal practitioner, law student and even judex who wishes to be familiar with or reminded of the nitty gritty of the appeal process.”
He concluded with a verdict that “This is the type of book that should be kept within reach of everyone seeking to go on appeal.”

Reputed for his integrity, Justice Daniel-Kalio was twice honoured by NBA Port Harcourt Branch, first with the maiden award as “Best Judge in Rivers State,” and later as “Judge of the Year.” He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2012 and retired recently from the appellate bench.
A seasoned prosecutor and prolific legal text writer, Eke distinguished herself as the pioneer female Chairman of the influential branch. A highly awarded senior lawyer, Eke also has the distinction of being the pioneer female Secretary of the branch.

FOREWORD
This book, RUDIMENTS OF CRIMINAL APPEALS, is the work of Mrs. Cordelia Uwuma Eke, a meticulous and seasoned legal practitioner who is presently a Director in the Rivers State Ministry of Justice and is currently the Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt Branch. Incidentally, Mrs Cordelia Uwuma Eke is the first female to Chair the Port Harcourt Branch of the NBA. The author is very knowledgeable in the appeal process, particularly criminal appeals, having prosecuted several appeals both as a private legal practitioner and at the Official Bar.
Having gone through the book and as one very familiar with appeals, what I find particularly useful and refreshing about it is the practical step-by-step exposition of what is required to file and smoothly see to a proper prosecution, progression and conclusion of an appeal in a criminal case whether the appeal is an interlocutory one or an appeal in a matter that has been finally determined by a Court of law, and also, notwithstanding the Court from which the appeal emanates or lies.
A user of the book will find that it is refreshingly devoid of the tedium of the grandiloquent, thus making for an easy understanding of the appeal process both to a wide-eyed greenhorn or to one already familiar with the appeal process.
I sincerely consider the book to be very useful. I therefore recommend it to every legal practitioner, law student and even judex who wishes to be familiar with or reminded of the nitty gritty of the appeal process. This is the type of book that should be kept within reach of everyone seeking to go on appeal.
Hon. Justice Obietonbara O. Daniel-Kalio, JCA rtd, DSSRS, OFR.
