NBA National Litigation Committee Files ₦500 Million Suit Over Assault on Legal Practitioner

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Litigation Committee has instituted a civil action at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory against four individuals—Williams Raymond, Fidelis Emmanuel Jacob, Sharon Alexander, and Itoro Dominic Robert — for the unlawful assault and violation of the fundamental human rights of Barrister John Boluwaji Ajiki.

The suit, filed on Monday, July 7, 2025, seeks N500 million in exemplary and punitive damages. This civil action is being pursued in parallel with an ongoing criminal case against the defendants at the Zone 6 Magistrate Court in Abuja. The defendants were arraigned and subsequently remanded at the Keffi Correctional Centre by Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna.

According to the Secretary of the NBA National Litigation Committee, Isah Abubakar Aliyu, the legal actions — both civil and criminal — are intended to serve as a strong deterrent to any individual or group who may contemplate assaulting or violating the rights of legal professionals.

“The Nigerian Bar Association will not tolerate attacks on its members. This case underscores our firm resolve to protect the dignity, safety, and rights of all lawyers within the Nigerian legal system,” Aliyu stated.

The NBA Litigation Committee reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and defending the legal profession from acts of intimidation, harassment, and violence.
