A top contender for the post of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidency, Chief Arthur Obi Okafor SAN has described Tuesday’s invasion of the National Assembly complex by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) as “a sad day for democracy.”

In a statement made available to CITY LAWYER, the leading litigator also said that the siege “is totally unacceptable and should be roundly condemned.”

The statement reads:

DSS BLOCKADE OF NATIONAL ASSEMBLY: A THREAT TO OUR HARD EARNED DEMOCRACY.

We woke up yesterday (Tuesday) morning to the sad and most embarrassing news of heavily armed and masked officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), laying siege on the National Assembly complex and members of staff and legislators, barred from gaining access to the complex.

Truly it was a sad day for our democracy as this action undermines all known and acceptable democratic norms and principles, violates the rule of law and threatens our hard earned democracy. It is totally unacceptable and should be roundly condemned by Nigerians and all men of good conscience, irrespective of political divides.

While commending the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) for his timely and decisive intervention in returning sanity to the polity and assuring Nigerians that the federal government is committed to protecting our democracy and safeguarding the rule of law, I urge the government to carry out a thorough investigation into the ugly incident and ensure that any official found culpable, faces appropriate disciplinary action.
