The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Afam Osigwe, SAN, welcomed delegates to the 2026 Annual General Conference, describing the event as more than a yearly gathering of lawyers.
He challenged members to use the conference as an opportunity to reflect on the profession’s responsibilities to the nation, strengthen the administration of justice and prepare the Bar for emerging realities.
Osigwe urged lawyers to embrace innovation, defend democratic institutions and remain steadfast in promoting the rule of law.
In one of the defining moments of his address, the President reminded delegates that the survival of democracy depends on the strength of institutions rather than individuals, declaring: “Democracy does not survive on strong men, but on strong institutions” – Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN
The statement underscored the President’s call for an independent judiciary, accountable governance and a legal profession that remains fearless in defending constitutional democracy.
