PRESS RELEASE BY THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION SECTION ON PUBLIC INTEREST AND DEVELOPMENT LAW (NBA-SPIDEL) ELECTORAL COMMITTEE ON THE RECENT INAUGURATION OF THE COMMITTEE AND THE WAY FORWARD FOR NBA-SPIDEL
Respected Bar leaders and distinguished stakeholders of the NBA-SPIDEL,
The newly constituted Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) Electoral Committee (essentially an Interim Management Committee) held her inaugural meeting on the 20th of May, 2025. We are happy to convey our unanimous unreserved acceptance of the assignment handed to us by the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association and hereby express our readiness to hit the ground running on the onerous task of rejuvenating SPIDEL as the operational hub and heartbeat of the Bar.
Recall that at the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held in Ilorin, Kwara State on the 15th of May, 2025, the NEC meeting dissolved the Steve Adehi, SAN led NBA-SPIDEL Steering Committee set up by the immediate past NBA administration and constituted this committee with Prof. Paul Ananaba, SAN, as Chairman. Other members of the committee include; Kunle Edun, SAN, Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, Saadatu Mohammed, Mojirayo Ogunlana, Enome Amatey and Okey Ohagba (Secretary).
The Committee applauds the NBA President, Mazi (Sir) Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN (KSC) for taking the bold step amidst prevailing huge challenges, to ensure that this vibrant arm of the NBA is resuscitated without further delay. We equally convey the Committee’s profound appreciation to the President for the confidence reposed on us to execute such critical mandate of the Bar – rebirthing NBA-SPIDEL.
We are pleased to announce the Committee’s resolve to convene a maiden NBA-SPIDEL STAKEHOLDERS’ ENGAGEMENT; to brainstorm and collate views from all SPIDEL stakeholders/Bar leaders and to unanimously chart an all-inclusive positive path for the Section. The NBA-SPIDEL STAKEHOLDERS’ ENGAGEMENT is scheduled to hold (virtually) on Friday, the 30th day of May, 2025 at 4pm prompt (meeting link to be circulated to all stakeholders).
More so, we are making adequate arrangements to ensure a full and resounding participation of SPIDEL at the forthcoming NBA-AGC in Enugu. Details of our activities and sessions for the planned AGC, including electoral guidelines for election of Council members at the said AGC at Enugu, will be published in due course. Existing SPIDEL members are hereby called upon to regularize their membership, while new members are welcomed.
The Committee hereby reassures members of the legal profession and the public that SPIDEL is poised to putting in place a free, fair and credible process through which a democratically elected leadership will emerge for the Section. Ahead of these, we reaffirm that SPIDEL shall not shirk in its responsibility of acting in the best of Public Interest by challenging government impunity and insensitivity, while ensuring that the rule of law is preserved and promoted for development of our nation at all times.
We pledge to work with the NBA President, the National Executive Council and other statutory organs of the NBA, and to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Constitution of the Nigerian Bar Association and set objectives of NBA-SPIDEL in the execution of our set objectives.
