The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has vowed that it would cancel any election by its Northern branches which does not comply with mandatory attendance of branch meetings set out in the NBA Constitution.
Describing the issue as “an important compliance requirement regarding branch meeting attendance records,” the notice seen by CITY LAWYER directed all Northern branch chairmen “to submit a comprehensive list of attendance for at least six (6) consecutive branch meetings.”
Signed by its Third Vice President Zainab Aminu Garba, the notice gave Friday, May 15, 2026, as deadline for the submission, warning that “For the avoidance of doubt, failure to submit the required attendance records will result in the disqualification (sic) of any branch election conducted in default of this directive.”

Election: Notice to All Chairmen of NBA Branches of Northern Zone
The Nigerian Bar Association wishes to formally notify all Chairmen of branches within the Northern Zone of an important compliance requirement regarding branch meeting attendance records and the forthcoming branch election.
In line with the NBA amended Constitution and in furtherance of transparency, accountability, and proper documentation within the Association, all branches are hereby directed to submit a comprehensive list of attendance for at least six (6) consecutive branch meetings.
This submission must be made on or before the 15th day of May, 2026.
The attendance record should clearly reflect:
*Dates of meetings
*Names of members present
*Any other relevant details that authenticate proper convening of meetings

It is important to emphasize that compliance with this directive is mandatory. Consequently, no branch election will be recognised or accepted by the NBA where the required attendance records have not been duly submitted within the stipulated timeline.
Chairmen are therefore urged to treat this directive with utmost urgency and seriousness, and to ensure prompt compliance.
For the avoidance of doubt, failure to submit the required attendance records will result in the disqualification of any branch election conducted in default of this directive.
