SAFIYA BALARABE SENDS GOODWILL MESSAGE TO NBA, LAGOS BRANCH ON ACCOUNT OF THEIR MONTHLY MEETING

Read below Safiya Balarabe’s goodwill message to NBA, Lagos branch as they conduct their monthly meeting, today 20th June, 2022.

“The distinguished Chairman, Executives and Members of the Premier Bar,

As you convoke today to conduct your monthly meeting, permit me to use this medium in conveying my thoughts to your elite Bar.

There are too numerous the positive adjectives that describe your branch. I will however harp on ‘excellent’. As though living up to your state’s mantra, you have made your bar the centre of excellence.

You have constantly infused this excellence in your meetings through your Knowledge Sharing Sessions. Today’s KSS which is ‘Law Firm Competency Framework for Law Firms’ by Dr. Adeoye Adefulu , Chairman NBA Lagos Branch Law Firm Competency Framework Committee) is another example of this fact.

I wish your bar more excellence in all its endeavours.

Thank you.”

Signed:

Safiya Balarabe

SUPREME COURT ORDERS SHELL, OTHERS TO MAINTAIN STATUS QUO IN N800BN SUIT

The Supreme Court has ordered all parties to maintain the status quo in a contempt proceeding filed against the Managing Director, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) Osagie Okunbor, and three management staff of the company.

A five-man panel of the Apex Court led by Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun gave the order on Thursday while delivering judgement on appeal number SV/CV/398/2022 filed by Osagie Okunbor and others over alleged disobedience of the orders of the Court. Other members of the panel are Justice Chima Centus Nweze, Justice Uwani Musa Abba Aji, Justice Helen Moronkeji Ogunwumju, and Justice Adamu Jauro.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun in her lead judgement held that the pending applications filed before the court are contentious and cannot be taken now. The Apex Court also ordered parties to file written addresses and to maintain the status quo pending the hearing of all the contentious applications.

The contentious applications before the court are, an application dated April 4, 2022, seeking an order staying further committal proceeding in Appeal Number, CA/OW/489/2020; an application dated April 21, 2022, seeking an order setting aside Ex-Debito Justitiae, Notice of Appeal filed in Appeal Number SC/CV/393/2022 and an application filed on April 29, 2022 asking the apex court for an order striking out ex debito justitiae, Notice of Appeal filed in appeal No. SC/CV/393/2022. The matter has been adjourned till November 3, 2022, for hearing.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri, Imo State had ordered the Managing Director and the other three management staff of Shell Petroleum Company to appear before it to show cause why they should not be committed for contempt of court.

The three-man appeal court presided over by the Honourable Justice Rita Pemu had on March 23, expressed displeasure with the management of Shell for disobeying two court rulings against the company. The judge held that Shell had disobeyed the lower court ruling while the Appeal Court also ordered Shell to deposit the N800 billion judgment sum against it into the court’s account, an order the company also allegedly disobeyed.

Still dissatisfied, the alleged contemnors, through their counsel, Chief J. J. Onanigbo Okpoko, SAN appealed the ruling.

Shell had applied for a motion seeking an order staying the execution of the Federal High Court judgment in Appeal Number CA/OW/498/20 and Appeal Number CA/OW/490/20 respectively.

On the other hand, counsel to 1st to 88th respondents, Mohammed Ndarant Mohammed, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria prayed the court to ignore the motion for an order staying execution and urged the court to mandate the appellants to deposit the money in an interest-yielding account pending the final determination of the appeal.

Mohammed also raised the fears the appellants were preparing to close shop in Nigeria and relocate to another country, which would jeopardize the judgment if nothing was done, according to a THISDAY report.

It had previously reported that the Owerri Appeal court had ordered Shell to deposit N800 billion (about $2b) in 48 hours over alleged oil spillage.

This comes after Shell appealed a November 2020 Federal High Court ruling that ordered Shell to pay 800 billion naira ($1.95 billion) to 88 communities of Egbalor Ebubu in Rivers state, who had accused the company of an oil spill that damaged their farms and waterways.

The three-man panel had on Monday, March 14, ordered Shell Plc to stop selling any assets in Nigeria until a decision is reached on its appeal of the nearly $2 billion penalty.

The judges said Shell, acting through its agents or subsidiaries was restrained from “selling, allocating, vandalising or disposing off any of its assets/properties pending the determination of the appeal.

Disappointed with the ruling Shell approached the apex court seeking for stay of the execution of the decision until the appeal is determined.

GADZAMA SHINES AT ELLAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

FEATURED

JOE-KYARI GADZAMA SAN SHOWS THAT HE IS INDEED THE PRIMUS INTER PARES AT THE ELLAN PRESIDENTIAL EXCHANGE

On Friday, June 17, 2022, the Learned Silk, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN was privileged to participate in the ELLAN (Employment and labour Lawyers Association of Nigeria) Presidential exchange.

The Learned Silk passionately answered the questions thrown to him during the debate which were tailored towards the wellbeing of lawyers – an area he remains passionate about.

On sexual harassment, he stated that young lawyers should always speak up and have adequate evidence backing up any allegation. Thereafter, he assured young lawyers that adequate protection will be given to them. Furthermore, he stated that strict punishment such as disbarment will be imposed on the culprits as such an act tarnishes the image of our noble profession. The Learned Silk re-emphasized that he will make sure that such acts are unheard of in the legal profession.

The Learned Silk, during the debate, stated that he believes that in the making of silk, what should be highlighted is whether the applicant has met all the requirements. If the applicant has met all the requirements, he should thus be made Silk. He concluded by advocating that all who have met the criteria should be made Silk, no matter the number.

The Learned Silk when asked a question on the amendment of the RPC stated that he is of the view that the rules should be amended as there were many challenges which were not addressed by the RPC such as the empowerment of lawyers to enable them earn a living outside the normal confinement of the legal profession. He opined that this is inconsistent with the mandate of the NBA which allows the NBA to create wealth and empower members within the parameters of the law.

The Learned Silk during the debate reiterated the well-known fact that the protection of lawyers from the abuse of law enforcement agencies is his priority.

On the question of how the renumeration of lawyers can be improved, the learned Silk stated that the young lawyers do a lot of work in law firms and are talented but they are not adequately appreciated. He stated that the time has come for them to be adequately appreciated by sufficient remuneration.

Furthermore he stated that a minimum pay should be stipulated for the profession.

In his closing remarks, Learned Silk stated that the other two candidates and presidential aspirants are qualified to be the next NBA President but he is the first among equals – the primus inter pares, the right person to lead the bar. He mentioned that this is due to the fact that the bar needs a person who is courageous, fearless and who will adequately fight for the independence of the Bar and the Judiciary.

COURT RULES BAN: AKPATA IN TALKS WITH ABIA CHIEF JUDGE

• SIT-AT-HOME ORDER DISRUPTS NBA/CJ PARLEY

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mr. Olumide Akpata has waded into the brewing crisis in the Abia State Judiciary following a directive by the Abia State Chief Judge, Justice Onuoha Ogwe to bar lawyers from its courts.

Justice Ogwe had in a letter to NBA branches in the state informed them of his directive to judges to deny audience to lawyers without original copies of the controversial Abia State High Court (Practice and Procedure) Rules, 2021.

CITY LAWYER gathered from impeccable sources that NBA branches in the state are bracing for a battle with the state chief judge over the directive which a senior lawyer described as “insulting and degrading.”

But apparently to stave off a full-blown face-off with lawyers which may cause total shutdown of the court system, Akpata told CITY LAWYER that he has waded into the matter with a view to reaching a resolution.

Aside from engaging the embattled chief judge on the matter, the NBA President has also directed the chairmen of NBA Umuahia and Aba branches to meet with Justice Ogwe in order to hammer out a win-win solution to the debacle.

Akpata told CITY LAWYER that “I have reached out to the CJ and I have also asked the Chairmen of our Umuahia and Aba Branches to see him today.”

On the position of the NBA on the controversial directive, Akpata said: “This directive really is not tenable and I have told the CJ that much. Firstly, right of audience before a Court cannot be circumscribed except by virtue of clear statutory provisions in this regard. Secondly, in this day and age it is a bit strange to insist that every lawyer must possess a hard copy of the Rules when technology provides us with other alternatives.”

The NBA President was however confident that an amicable resolution would be reached on the face-off, saying: “I am hopeful that the matter will be resolved today after the meeting between the CJ and our Chairmen.”

However, there are strong indications that today’s meeting may not hold due to the weekly sit-at-home in the South East originally ordered by the pro-independence group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

When CITY LAWYER contacted the chairman of NBA Umuahia Branch on whether the meeting was underway, he said: “The time of our meeting with the CJ is not yet settled. Today is sit-at-home in the East.”

CITY LAWYER recalls that the chief judge had in the letter observed that “lawyers have refused to purchase the new High Court Rules, while some photocopied the Rules for use in court.”

Dated June 16 and signed by the Chief Registrar of Abia State High Court, Mr. V. C. Okey-Nwokeukwu, the letter warned: “The Hon. Chief Judge directs that as from the date of this letter, any lawyer that appears in our High Court without his copy of the High Court Rules shall not be granted audience.”

But a senior lawyer who practices in the state told CITY LAWYER that many lawyers in the state are “agitated” by the directive, adding that they view it as “insulting and degrading.”

He said that while it is inappropriate for lawyers to photocopy the Rules as this may infringe copyright laws, “I can tell you that the directive will be ignored by most lawyers. Also, no judge can enforce that directive. On what basis will they do so? It is not compulsory for any lawyer to go to court with any Rules of court. It is optional. More importantly, it is payment of Bar Practising Fee that accords a lawyer audience in court, not possession of any court rules.”

Apart from Umuahia and Aba, the other NBA branches in Abia State are Isiala Ngwa, Ohafia, and Ukwa.

CITY LAWYER investigation shows that at least one jurist, Justice C. U. Okoroafor has refused to recognize the new Rules given that it bears the name of the former chief judge of the state as the signatory.

It was gathered that though the current chief judge had ‘corrected’ the defect through a Practice Direction, Justice Okoroafor does not permit the use of the Rules in his court, leading to a face-off with NBA Aba Branch which directed its members to boycott Justice Okoroafor’s court, citing “particularly his blatant refusal to use and or allow lawyers to rely on and or use the Abia State (Practice & procedure) Rules, 2021 in his court on the erroneous premise that there was no High Court Civil Procedure Rules in existence in Abia State.”

‘THANK YOU FOR ACCEPTING ME,’ AMANDA ASAGBA TELLS MIDWEST BAR FORUM

The Midwest Bar Forum has always been a beacon of hope and a rallying point for lawyers in the region. The Forum has been pivotal in pushing the frontiers of welfare schemes for its members.

Not surprisingly, this was replicated at the meeting of the Forum held yesterday in the royal city of Benin.

Let me also use this opportunity to put on record my deep appreciation to the Chairman, Prof. Nat Inegbedion and the entire members of the Forum for the very warm reception accorded me during the meeting, and especially for the audience and acceptance extended to me. I felt really loved and at home. Thank you.

Long Live the Midwest Bar Forum!

‘I CELEBRATE OUR LAWYER-FATHERS TODAY,’ SAYS AMANDA ASAGBA

It gives me great pleasure to celebrate our fathers today. The occasion of Father’s Day presents us with a splendid opportunity to appreciate the God-ordained place of fathers in every family.

Fathers are known to be symbols of authority and discipline in our families and in the society at large. This is a huge task that must not be taken for granted.

It is expected that as lawyers, we should carry this role into the legal community by fostering discipline and eschewing any manner of misconduct.

We celebrate you all today and always.

FUNMI ADEOGUN ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT: THE THREE SERVANTS (Part 19)

ADEOGUN, FUNMILOLA OLUWATOSIN LECTURES ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT: THE THREE SERVANTS (Part 19)

Remember the lesson in part 18 is Carry out background check on the person you want to Entrust with your Money.

Be Clear with Expectations

Anytime you are working with someone on business or a financial transaction, be clear with what is expected of each party. If the third servant had asked more questions about what was expected of him, he might have been better off. If you’re not clear or you think another party is not clear, talk it over until clarity is achieved. Doing the work up front is better for everyone.

‘FATHERS ARE GATE-KEEPERS OF EVERY HOME ,’ SAYS CLEMENT CHUKWUEMEKA

FEATURED

Happy Fathers Day

A glorious and calvary greetings to all fathers and expectant fathers in the legal community

It gives me joy in this period of the year to appreciate hard working fathers. We are the gate keepers of every home. Fathers that are lacking in their God given responsibility should utilize this opportunity to reflect in their character and behaviour towards our wives and people around us.

Fathers should desist from beating their wives, no matter the provocation, love them and cherish them. I admonish Fathers in the legal community today to hand over our accounts to our wives.

Greater nations are made from peaceful homes where father and wife respect each other and every home is headed by a father.

Can we resolve today that we owe the society our best towards making our country a better place to live in?

There is no home without a father cos God never leaves us fatherless. When the physical father is not there , the spiritual father will always be there for us . For God is :

“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.”
“God bringeth out families which are bound with chains” [ Psalm 68:5-6]. And those against any family of God shall live in dry land.

NBA BRANCHES SET TO BATTLE ABIA CJ OVER DIRECTIVE

A recent directive by the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Onuoha Ogwe to judges in the Abia State Judiciary to deny audience to lawyers without original copies of the new Abia State High Court (Practice and Procedure) Rules, 2021 may cause a fresh rift with Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) branches in the state.

The directive obtained by CITY LAWYER and addressed to Nigerian Bar Association branches in the state noted that “lawyers have refused to purchase the new High Court Rules, while some photocopied the Rules for use in court.”

Dated June 16 and signed by the Chief Registrar of Abia State High Court, Mr. V. C. Okey-Nwokeukwu, the circular warned: “The Hon. Chief Judge directs that as from the date of this letter, any lawyer that appears in our High Court without his copy of the High Court Rules shall not be granted audience.”

CITY LAWYER investigation shows that lawyers in Abia State may be bracing for a battle with the state judiciary over the directive. A senior lawyer who spoke to CITY LAWYER on the controversy said that many lawyers in the state are “agitated” by the directive, adding that they view it as “insulting and degrading.”

On his part, the Chairman of NBA Umuahia Branch, Mr. Oliver Amuzie told CITY LAWYER that he is in receipt of the letter, adding that “I am aware that other branch chairmen in the state have just received their copies of the letter.”

He said that the branch chairmen would discuss the matter this weekend with a view to have a common position on it. “I am already reaching out to my brother-chairmen on the issue,” he said. “We have a common platform and we would soon arrive at a resolution on the matter.”

Apart from Umuahia and Aba, the other NBA branches in Abia State are Isiala Ngwa, Ohafia, and Ukwa.

CITY LAWYER gathered that the ongoing boycott of courts by lawyers under the aegis of NBA Aba Branch may not be unconnected with the controversy surrounding the new Rules.

It is recalled that the branch had in a resolution dated 10th June, 2022 and signed by Messrs Bertram Faotu and Chinedu Nwaozuzu, its Chairman and Secretary respectively, ordered its members to boycott the court of Justice C. U. Okoroafor.

The branch leadership said that “the resolution was arrived pursuant to the learned Justice’s continued show of absolute disdain for proper judicial conduct and particularly his blatant refusal to use and or allow lawyers to rely on and or use the Abia State (Practice & procedure) Rules, 2021 in his court on the erroneous premise that there was no High Court Civil Procedure Rules in existence in Abia State.”

CITY LAWYER investigation showed that the jurist had allegedly taken the position that the signing of the Abia State (Practice & procedure) Rules, 2021 was defective, given that it bears the name of the former chief judge of the state.

It was gathered that though the current chief judge had ‘corrected’ the defect through a Practice Direction, Justice Okoroafor does not permit the use of the Rules in his court, leading to a face-off with NBA Aba Branch.

Remember the lesson in part 17 is: Evaluate each of the SERVANTS according to his ability and capacity before committing your Treasury in his hands.

Also, carefully Evaluate Someone You Entrust with your Money

Trust is important when it comes to finance. If you’re thinking about entrusting money to someone else, make time to check the company or individual out. This could be looking around online or asking around. Another good question is to ask how someone is paid or if they are a fiduciary.

‘LAWYERS MUST USE PHONES IN POLICE STATIONS,’ SAYS GADZAMA

FEATURED

LAWYERS SHOULD BE ALLOWED ENTRY TO POLICE FORMATIONS WITH THEIR MOBILE PHONES – JOE-KYARI GADZAMA, SAN

On Thursday, June 16, 2022, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN who is the incumbent Chairman of NBA-Security Agency Relations Committee (NBA-SARC) and the Pioneer Chairman of NBA-Section on Public Interest & Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), penned down an appeal to the inspector General of Police requesting that lawyers should be allowed entry with their mobile phones to all police formations across the country.

It is common knowledge that we now live in a digital world and accordingly, lawyers require their mobile phones to perform their daily business activities. The trend of dropping off phones by lawyers at collection points established by the police force and other security agencies renders a lawyer almost ineffective as they are not able to deliver and communicate with their clients during the period of time spent at the police formations or security agencies.

While acknowledging the mutual relationship between the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Bar Association as champions in the fight against corruption and injustice in the country, the Learned Silk in his letter solemnly requested for the urgent intervention by issuing a written notice from the office of the Inspector General of Police for compliance on this matter as it will aid in adding positive value to the daily work activities of lawyers.

‘CLEMENT CHUKWUEMEKA IS A SERVANT-LEADER,’ SAYS LAWYER

MR. CLEMENT UGO CHUKWUEMEKA (AKA DEMOCRATS) IS A “GOOD PRODUCT FOR THE NBA MARKET” SAYS MENTOR ORIERE, ESQ.

I met Mr. Clement Ugo Chukwuemeka, Esq. in 2020 when my brother and colleague, Mr. Benson Aigbojie, was physically assaulted by personnel of the Nigerian Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, while in pursuit of his professional duty as counsel to one of the Police detainees.

As soon as Mr. Clement Ugo Chukwuemeka got wind of the indecent treatment of our colleague by personnel of the Nigerian Police, kabusa Police station to be precise in Abuja, he headed straight for the Police station where this assault took place. He immediately contacted the then President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN. Whilst a wrong information was given as regards my brother ordeal. He deployed the totality of his arsenals in seeking the redress of Mr. Benson Aigbojie for the unprofessional conduct of the Police.

As the Chairman of the Bwari branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, he proved himself to be a servant-leader and this earned him the love, respect and admiration of members of the Bar in FCT and beyond. Ever since that time till now, he has remained a noble servant-leader and a rallying point for many members of the bar, regardless of their post call ranking. He has assisted me personally in ensuring that I excel in my practice as a courtroom advocate and in the legal profession in general. I am persuaded that Democrats as we fondly call him, is a “good product for the NBA market” and I urge all members of our noble Association (the NBA) to support his bid for the office of 2nd Vice President of the NBA in the forthcoming coming election as he contributed towards the love I have for NBA till date. Clement Ugo Chukwuemeka is indeed a sui generis undiluted Bar man.

‘CLEMENT CHUKWUEMEKA MADE PERSONAL SACRIFICES FOR JUSTICE DELIVERY,’ SAYS OLADAPO

I had worked with Mr Clement Ugo Chukwuemeka aka Democrat, the immediate Past Chairman NBA Bwari Branch as the Secretary of the branch and as a member of the Executive Committee.

I can attest to the fact that he is a leader imbued with the spirit of service.
He is humane, loving and selfless leader who can go extra mile for the welfare of members, non members as well. I remember his efforts in ensuring a colleague and a member of the Unity Bar who was detained and assaulted by the overzealous police officer regained his freedom..

His passion for the speedy justice administration is second to none. Mr Chukwuemeka made personal sacrifice , towards addressing the facility’s deficits in the courts within the jurisdiction. I witnessed cases where he used his personal money to fix bulbs, fans, Acs in our court rooms and the judges’ chambers from Bwari to Dutse all the way to Kubwa. He is a good Christian and peace lover. I identify with his cause.

‘YOU’RE A BULWARK FOR LESS PRIVILEGED,’ SAFIYA BALARABE TELLS FIDA LAGOS

SAFIYA BALARABE SENDS GOODWILL MESSAGE TO INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN LAWYERS (FIDA), LAGOS BRANCH AS THEY CONDUCT THEIR 2022 ANNUAL LAW WEEK

Read below Safiya Balarabe’s goodwill message to the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) on account of their 2022 Annual Law Week themed “Education as a Catalyst for Boosting the Self Image of the African Child”.

“FIDA, Lagos branch has over the years demonstrated an unparalleled level of capacity in championing the cause of the less privileged in the society; organizing people oriented programs and stepping in to act as a beacon of hope for those whose life experiences have dimmed their spirit.

“This year’s Law Week themed ‘Education as a catalyst for Boosting the Self Image of the African Child’ is a perfect example of the above point. This theme touches on the very soul of the African continent, its future and dynamics. We are well aware that an uneducated population is a handicapped one. This is why if the African continent is serious about pulling out of its present state of underdevelopment, it must as a matter of duty invest in the self esteem of its future generations by putting in place the necessary requirements for sound education.

I am full of praises for the leadership and members of FIDA, Lagos State for this all-important program.

Thank you.

Signed:

Safiya Balarabe

‘WE WILL ISSUE CODE ON LAWYER SAFETY SOON,’ GADZAMA TELLS NBA-NEC

FEATURED

ENCOMIUMS AS THE JOE-KYARI GADZAMA-LED NBA-SARC PRESENTS ITS REPORT TO NBA-NEC, MAKES BOLD RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVED SAFETY OF LAWYERS

At the Nigerian Bar Association – National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at Ilorin on Thursday, June 9, 2022, the chairman of the NBA- Security Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC), Joe-Kyari Gadzama SAN, presented the report of the NBA- SARC, highlighting the streak of successes, strives, strides and achievements of the NBA-SARC, in less than 6 months of its inauguration, stating that within the period of six months of the inauguration of the NBA-SARC, the Committee has successfully intervened in over 15 cases involving legal practitioners and security agencies across the country.

Chief Gadzama stated further that apart from the NBA-SARC’s interventions, it has also organised a Townhall Sensitization Webinar where it created awareness of its mandates. On Saturday, February 19, 2022, the NBA-SARC also organized a roundtable discussion with executives of the NBA branches and thereafter followed up with a virtual townhall sensitization for young lawyers, this is to create a consciousness of its mandate and also to discuss issues bothering on safety and welfare of legal practitioners.

The NBA-SARC has also participated in the CLEEN Foundation Methodology Workshop ahead of the Police Reform Audit in Nigeria, an event which was held on May 18, 2022, at the NBA-Secretariat, among a host of other events participated in, aim at championing improved welfare for the Nigerian Lawyers.

Speaking passionately, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama said there was a lot more to do as he itemized the several upcoming programs of the NBA-SARC. He noted that the NBA-SARC has also lined up a series of other hybrid programs, physical and online, directed at the sensitization of both personnel of security agencies and legal practitioners, viz Webinars, Workshops, Courtesy Visits, et al. tailored, ultimately, for an improved efficient and cordial relations with security agencies across the country, focally including the Nigerian Police Force.

In the NBA-SARC’s report as presented by Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, the following far-reaching recommendations for the improved safety of the Nigerian lawyers were made:

1. Subcommittees of the NBA-SARC at each of the 125 branches of the NBA: That in line with the mandates of the NBA-SARC to work with the various branches of the NBA to achieve, at the branch level, its objectives, there is plan to raise subcommittees of the NBA-SARC at each of the 125 branches of the NBA, comprised of 5 to 15 members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum (YLF), to be headed by the Chairmen of the YLF of each branch, and the National Chairman of the NBA YLF, to be co-opted to our Committee.

Chief Gadzama explained that this will provide a prompt complaint platform, more easily accessible to members of the NBA, at the various branch level. This will also help in the collation of harassment cases and intimidation against lawyers by security agencies, and importantly, the urgency with which they are dealt with. It is also worthy of note that the YLF provides an arsenal that can be empowered by the NBA to help in the fight against human rights abuses, thereby promoting public interest lawyering.

2. Wider membership of NBA-SARC to include Representatives of the Law Enforcement Agencies: The NBA-SARC Chairman explained that the importance of having all hands on deck for the NBA-SARC and the NBA to consistently take the lead in the safety and welfare of all legal practitioners across the country. That there was a dire need for a broadened membership of the NBA-SARC to include representatives of the Law Enforcement Agencies who are Legal Officers that are part and parcel of the NBA as qualified legal practitioners within the public sector. This will further foster a harmonious relationship with these respective law enforcement agencies.

3. Preparation of a Code of Engagement for Lawyers in their Relations with Law Enforcement Agencies: Chief Gadzama explained that one of the mandates of the NBA-SARC is to “develop and promote proper protocols for engagement with security agencies by lawyers, in the course of carrying out their professional duties”. That the Committee has noted the need for a code that provides guidelines and/or protocols to aid lawyers in proper engagement with security agencies in the course of carrying out professional duties.

4. Need for the NBA-SARC to be a Standing Committee: The NBA-SARC Chairman explained that the NBA-SARC presently liaises with these security agencies with a view to stemming the ugly trend of harassment of legal practitioners and engendering a harmonious and mutually beneficial working relationship between members of the NBA and members of the various Security Agencies. This, Chief Gadzama, explained as an ongoing process and bridges of trust and mutual respect are presently being built. That as with bridges, it takes consistency, hard work planning and strategy to build. If the present drive to ensure the welfare and safety of legal practitioners is to be further entrenched and strengthened, that there is an urgent need to make the NBA-SARC a Standing Committee of the NBA so that there is continuity in the works of the Committee, so that the efforts made so far, do not go down the drain and that the momentum set by this Akpata-led administration is sustained.

5. The Need for Yearly Workshop or Town Hall meeting with Law Enforcement Agencies: The successes recorded at the 1st Hybrid Townhall Meeting of the NBA-SARC held on the 5th day of April, 2022, at the Auditorium of the NBA National Secretariat, Abuja should be sustained. Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama explained that the floodgate of feedback at the said maiden Hybrid Meeting, jointly emphasize the need for frequent liaisons and/or interaction between the Bar and the security agencies and that there was a need for more of such meetings to foster a cordial relationship between the NBA and security agencies across Nigeria. The Gadzama-led Committee has therefore reiterated the need for a yearly workshop and/or Town-hall meeting with law enforcement agencies across the country.

SAFIYA BALARABE ACCLAIMS NBA BENIN ON LAW WEEK

NBA BENIN 2022 ANNUAL LAW WEEK CELEBRATION: SAFIYA BALARABE, CANDIDATE FOR NBA TREASURER HAILS THE LION BAR

The ongoing 2022 Annual Law Week of the NBA, Benin branch (Lion Bar) has been greeted by a goodwill message from Safiya Balarabe. The Treasurer, NBA Women Forum lauded the branch for putting together a power-packed event which complements its apposite theme.

The statement reads:

“‘Security: Panacea for National Growth’ is the chosen theme for this year’s Law Week celebration of the NBA Benin branch (“Lion Bar”). No one can argue otherwise, to the effect that nowhere in the world has development ever been recorded in the midst of turmoil.

With a theme this apposite, I looked forward to a Law Week that matches same and I was not disappointed, as a matter of fact, I am greatly impressed by the organizational prowess of the Lion Bar. The Law Week so far has run smoothly with attendant intellectualism and glamour. One could mistake same for the NBA AGC itself.

I commend the leadership of the Lion Bar, its members and very importantly, the planning committee.

Thank you and God bless”.

‘LOOKING BACK ENABLES BETTER DECISIONS,’ SAFIYA BALARABE LAUDS NBA IKEJA

SAFIYA BALARABE, CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION OF THE NBA TREASURER SENDS GOODWILL MESSAGE TO NBA IKEJA AS THEY CELEBRATE THEIR 2022 ANNUAL LAW WEEK

Safiya Balarabe, candidate for NBA Treasurer, has penned a goodwill message to the Ikeja Branch of the NBA on the occasion of their 2022 Annual Law celebration tagged: “2023, looking backward to move forward” holding between 10th and 17th of June, 2022.

The statement reads”

“The distinguished leadership and members of the NBA Ikeja branch (“Tiger Bar”),

I am delighted to extend my thoughts to your great branch as you celebrate your 2022 Annual Law Week. The theme ‘2023, looking backward to move forward’ reminds us of the importance of looking back in time order to make better decisions with a view to making desired progress. We cannot as a nation afford to get it wrong in 2023, hence, we must let ourselves be guided by antecedents while making our choices.

This theme could not have been more apt. As a matter of fact, it is one of the best I have come across thus far. I commend the Tiger Bar for this timely reminder.

I wish you a successful Law Week celebration.

Thank you and God bless”

FUNMI ADEOGUN ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT: THE THREE SERVANTS (PT. 15)

ADEOGUN, FUNMILOLA OLUWATOSIN LECTURES ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT: THE THREE SERVANTS (Part 15)

Remember the lesson in part 14 is Master needs DEMONSTRATED ABILITY AND CAPACITY. Do have the required experience?

The master in the parable of ‘THE THREE SERVANTS’ also gives us insight into the the second parameter used in allocating capital:

Now, let’s look at the issue of profit. The servants that were commended in the parable were those who made maximum profit on their enterprise. As it is written, “The first servant went to work and doubled his master’s investment.” And his master commended him. Ditto the second. We can reasonably conclude that 100% return on investment is permissible. Stop feeling guilty about making profit on your TREASURY.

In actual fact the man God had a problem with was the one who made no profit. You’re not running a business if you’re not profit-oriented.

Your aim should be to double the investment of your Master. That’s how to impress your master in business. Profit motive is critical in business.

Lesson: YOU MUST DOUBLE THE TREASURY FOR THE MASTER TO BE HAPPY WITH YOU

GADZAMA AT FIDA LAW WEEK, LAUDS EFFORTS ON CHILD RIGHTS

FEATURED

JOE-KYARI GADZAMA, SAN ATTENDS OPENING SESSION OF FIDA LAGOS LAW WEEK 2022.

Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, a well-known supporter and advocate for women’s rights, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Candidate for the Office of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, in his continuing support of women and women Lawyers was in attendance at the opening ceremony of FIDA (International Federation of Women Lawyers) Lagos Branch, held at the Institute of International Affairs, VI, Lagos, today 14/6/22

The Learned silk in his goodwill message to the group of women Lawyers, beamed with pride at the progress of branch in tackling issues against women and children in Lagos state and congratulated the members of FIDA Lagos branch on the choice of theme for the Law Week: “EDUCATION as a catalyst for boosting the self-image of the African Child”.

In his opinion, the very need to secure the rights of an African Child cannot be overemphasized as Africa has been challenged with the lack of good leadership, poverty, and degradation of persons majorly women and children who are pushed into trafficking. Sensitization of the African Child is a strong tool which can enlighten the African Child most especially the Girl Child to their endless world of possibilities in developing and securing their self-image as well as an enviable future profitable to the African continent and the world.

Chief J-K Gadzama,SAN went further to commend the Chairman, executives and members of the branch for taking him as one of theirs and for their numerous sacrifices and constructive efforts in moving the branch forward and assured the branch of his continuing support always.

‘YOUR LAW WEEK THEME IS APT,’ TAIDI TELLS NBA IKEJA BRANCH

GOODWILL MESSAGE TO NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION IKEJA BRANCH ON HER 2022 LAW WEEK

It is with great delight that I felicitate with the Chairman, Executive and Planning Committees as well as the entire members of the Nigerian Bar Association Ikeja Branch on her 2022 Law Week with the theme: “2023: Looking Backwards To Move Forward.”

There is a common African saying that “God created eyes in front so we can always look forward rather than backwards.”

However, as the great Chinua Achebe said, “We must know where the rain began to beat us in order to know where we dried our body.” In other words, it is only by examining the past that we are able to take stock and measure our progress in every endeavour.

Therefore, the choice of this theme is remarkably creative and apt and like the roar of a lion, quite a wake up call in view of the approaching general elections scheduled for 2023.

The recent primary elections of the major political parties, which was brazenly “dollarized,” was a huge embarrassment to our democratic journey.

Of great concern is the supervision of these carnivals by various national agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices are Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) and other similar bodies which have, at their disposal, the facilities and manpower to check these excesses, but chose to look the other way.

It is impossible to make any meaningful progress when we fail to examine the issues that continue to take us backwards in this same journey where other countries with less potentials have recorded tremendous growth.

I challenge all participants at this event to put on their thinking cap and help discover the ways out of our regressive quargmire as a nation.

This indeed will be the greatest gift in our quest for national rebirth.

May we all be counted as part of the solution as we share very meaningful exchanges on this august occasion.

I wish you all a memorable and beneficial law week.

TRIBUNAL BARS 4 MORE ASPIRANTS FROM NBA ELECTIONS

The Nigerian Bar Association Election Appeals Tribunal (NBA-NEAC) has dismissed the appeals of four more aspirants in the forthcoming NBA Elections.

The aspirants whose electoral journey have been cut short by the tribunal include Ms. Adaeze Ann Anah, an aspirant for the position of NBA Representative at the General Council of the Bar (GCB) as well as her counterparts, Messrs Jude Okey Ugwanyi, Sunday Abayomi Akanni and Olufemi Adeneye Onakoya.

In upholding the decision of the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA) which disqualified Anah, the Appeals Tribunal held: “The Petitioner’s Nominator, Mr. Jacob Johnson Usman, SAN and the Seconder Ms Mimi Ayua, are both from the Northern Geographical Zone.”

“By virtue of Part V, Paragraph 2 of the Second Schedule to the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended), each Zone in the NBA must produce at least Six (6) representatives to the General Council of the Bar. This implies that representation into the General Council of the Bar is on zonal basis, and duly stipulated in the NBA Constitution.”

The tribunal then held that “In the light of the totality of the findings above, we hold that the Petitioner was not validly nominated and seconded, because the Petitioner’s Nominator and her Seconder are not as qualified as her.”

On Akanni, the tribunal stated that “We hold that the ECNBA acted within its powers and the Law, in disqualifying the Appellant in line with our findings above, because the Appellant’s seconder, did not and does not meet the constitutional requirement, having not come from the same geographical zone with the Appellant, which is in breach of Part V, Sections 2 and 5 of the Second Schedule of the NBA Constitution.”

Turning to Ugwanyi, the Appeals Tribunal said: “We hold that the Petitioner having not provided evidence of payment of his Nominator’s branch dues for years 2020 & 2021, did not meet the requirements of a valid nomination to enable him contest the election.

“We also hold that by the provisions of Part V, S. 2 of the Second Schedule to the Constitution, the Petitioner`s Nominator, Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi being of the Northern Geographical Zone is not qualified to nominate the Petitioner who is from the Eastern Geographical Zone.”

On Onakoya, the tribunal stated that “The reason which the ECNBA premised its decision is well grounded because the Nominator does not meet the constitutional requirement, having not come from the same zone which is in breach of Part V, Sections 2 and 5 of the Second Schedule of the NBA Constitution. We also hold, that the zoning arrangement to aspire or contest to the seat as a representative to the General Council of the Bar, by a candidate, must of necessity, also apply to the Nominator and Seconder.”

CITY LAWYER recalls that the tribunal had earlier upheld the decisions of the ECNBA disqualifying some other aspirants from the election. These include NBA 1st Vice President aspirant, Mr. Muhammad Doko Idris; his 2nd Vice President counterpart, Mr. Finian Ndukwu, and a 3rd Vice President aspirant, Mr. Promise Besinginwayemi Awolowo Ademi-Akpeto.

Others are Mr. Chukwuemeka Mbamala, an aspirant for the post of Treasurer as well as Mr. Felix Ashimole (aka Che Oyinatumba) whose quest for the position of NBA Publicity Secretary was also cut short by the ECNBA hammer.

The NBA election is scheduled to hold via electronic voting on July 16, 2022.

It is why capital was re-allocated from the man who made no use of his capital, and transferred to the man who made use of his capital. Demonstrated ability. This is why some people can’t understand why God keeps blessing the business of someone they consider “unspiritual.” It is capacity God is looking at. And that’s not saying we should be carnal. I’m just explaining a phenomenon. It’s important you understand how God reasons when it comes to business. He’s pretty serious about economic resources.

Lesson: Master needs DEMONSTRATED ABILITY AND CAPACITY. Do have the required experience?

OGUNJIDE EMERGES NBA GWAGWALADA CHAIR, VOWS INCLUSIVE BAR

FEATURED

Following the election of the Gwagwalada Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association conducted on Saturday, the 11th of June, 2022 , Mr. Emmanuel Tayo Ogunjide, popularly known as ETO, has emerged as the new Chairman after a keenly contested election. To emerge as the new Chairman, Mr. Ogunjide scored 102 votes to defeat his only contender for the position, Mr. David Ebosetale Aigbefoh who garnered 25 votes only.

The results of the election was openly announced by the Electoral Committee of the branch Chaired by Ashara Mohammed, Esq. Thereafter, Mr Ogunjide got sworn in as the new Chairman before an array of who is who from the Gwagwalada branch of the Bar.

In his maiden but brief remarks shortly after taking his oaths of office and allegiance as Chairman, Mr Ogunjide promised to live up to the expectations of the branch in line with his campaign promises while seeking for the position. The event which held at the Gwagwalada Division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, afforded the visibly elated Mr Ogunjide the opportunity to be thankful to God, elders of the Gwagwalada branch of NBA, the Electoral Committee, his campaign teams and others too numerous to mention who contributed in one way or the other to his emergence as the new helmsman of the Gwagwalada branch of NBA.

In his usual unassuming and modest nature which he exhibited throughout the period of the campaign, Mr Ogunjide was emphatic that though he won the election overwhelmingly, however, in a contest of that magnitude involving learned members of the Bar, there’s neither a victor nor vanquished. It was a remark which earned him a thunderous applause.

The new chairman alongside members of his new executives thereafter took a symbolic salutary bow before everybody to affirm their appreciation and readiness to set the ball rolling in serving the branch wholeheartedly.

Immediately he assumed office, the first assignment performed by the new Chairman was to seek for the ratification of the reconstitution of the Electoral Committee of the Branch which he accordingly announced will henceforth remain a standing committee in line with the Uniformed Bye Laws of the Nigeria Bar Association..All members at the Annual General Meeting collectively, without any hesitation, approved same.
Mr Tayo Ogunjide further informed members on the need to roll out the drums as the Gwagwalada branch of NBA now under his watch has attained 10 years of existence having been created in 2012. A Committee to that effect was again expressly approved by the members for the new Executive to set it up without much ado.

It later became an emotion laden gathering with full of gratitude to God as Mr Ogunjide openly used the opportunity to thank his wife, Magistrate Janada Balami-Ogunjide and his family members for their unflinching support before, during and after the electioneering campaigns.

The icing on the cake of his gratitude to God and humanity were members of his campaign team; ETOTRATIB/THINK TANK which he specially recognized and acknowledged as the solid rock of Gibraltar behind his success story as the new chairman, stressing that, for the rest of his life, he will always live to appreciate their love, support and magnanimity. He also acknowledged the spirit of his opponent Team ABTC.

Other members of the newly sworn in executive of the 10 year old Gwagwalada branch of NBA are Miss Onwubiko Barbara as Vice Chairman, Hassan Luqman Olayiwola, Esq. as Secretary, and Mr. Olusegun Richard Femi, Esq. as Publicity Secretary. Completing the list of the new Exco are: Mrs Gwary Tessy who was sworn in as Financial Secretary, Mrs. Ezegwu Emmanuela as Assistant Secretary, Mrs Esther Opeyemi Akinrinde as Treasurer,
Mrs. Oboh Christy as Welfare Secretary, Eze Friday Esq. as Social Secretary and the last but not the least member of the ETO led Exco is Mr Aliyu Zubairu Yakubu, Esq. as the provost of the team.

Dignitaries who attended the swearing in ceremony include Prof Mrs J. A . A Agbonika, (SAN), Alhaji I.G Haruna and A. A Mohammed, Esq. among others too numerous to mention, who, one after the other prayed to God to grant newly elected Executive members of the Eagle Bar the necessary wisdom, knowledge, grace and tenacity of purpose to be able to soar like an eagle while carrying out the enormous tasks ahead of them.

‘FACTORS THAT DETERMINE RETURN ON INVESTMENT,’ BY SAFIYA BALARABE

HOW TO ENSURE FAVOURABLE RETURN ON INVESTMENT

The long-run rate of return on investments ultimately determines how much wealth people accumulate over time. Always look at returns when considering mutual funds or exchange-traded funds.

Likewise, it is important to know your risk tolerance, your investment timeframe, your asset allocation and the product or business you are investing in.

A smart businessman or woman must consider these in order to ensure favourable Return on Investment

‘ISAAC OGBAH IS SOCIAL ACTIVIST, VOICE OF VOICELESS,’ SAYS ADEGOKE

My name is Wale Adegoke, Esq. I am a Legal Practitioner, Chartered Arbitrator, and the current Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Bar association (NBA) and the Chairman, Human Right Committee.

Hearing about the interest of Isaac Omuta Ogbah, FICMC in contesting for the position of 3rd Vice President of the NBA, I know that the time has come for the real change to galvanize the legacies of the Olumide Akpata administration.

I have known Ogbah for a very long time precisely around 2004-2005 when we worked together as Counsel in the Law Firm of Punuka Chambers at Lake Street, Apongbon, Lagos State. His passion for law is contagious. No wonder he excelled at the interview and was hired. All through the period we were together, he performed creditably and was a model of diligence and discipline.

After his exit from the firm, he had carved numerous niche for himself including setting up of the ‘Erudite Judgements of the Supreme Court’ and publication of several legal texts including the one in intellectual property.

He is a social activist and a voice to the voiceless on critical social issues.

Subsequently, he became the Vice Chairman of the Utter Bar between the periods of 2016–2018 and served as the Chairman from 2018-2020. His administration came out to be trail blazing and standards. He launched the Utter Bar into national prominence and Bar consciousness that catapulted our Branch to the 5th position out of the 125 branches nationwide as at the time.

Isaac Omuta Ogbah, FICMC work ethics is second to none and has the unique skills of innovation, communication, relationship building and philanthropy as his great strengths which will come in handy in his role as the 3rd Vice President [when elected]. He has single handedly spearheaded public/bar related projects without expectation of rewards.

It is for these reasons and many more that I wholeheartedly endorse Isaac Omuta Ogbah for the office of the 3rd Vice President of the NBA.

This is a golden opportunity for the legal profession in Nigeria to have a genuine asset in the person of Isaac Omuta Ogbah onboard our ship who can truly walk the talk.

FUNMI ADEOGUN’S FINANCIAL INVESTMENT NUGGETS: PARTS 11-13

ADEOGUN, FUNMILOLA OLUWATOSIN LECTURES ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT TITLED THE THREE SERVANTS (Part 11)

Remember the lesson in part 10 is ‘Don’t hesitate to remove an unproductive servant from your management.’

It is good to know that success is a product of our work.

Adam was placed in the garden to work it and take care of it. We were made to work.

It is good to know the psyche of master, the financial investor. Ironically the servant who gave us insight into this psyche was the third servant, the one who didn’t make use of the capital allocated to him. This is how the servant describes him: “I knew you to be a harsh and hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you had not winnowed.” (Matthew 25:24 AMP) The Message bible puts it this way: “I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error.”

These are thus the characteristics of the master:
1. He has very high standards
2. He hates carelessness in business
3. He zero tolerance for error
4. He hates disappointment
5. He wants his money intact
6. He’s a hard-nosed businessman
7. He disdains over-cautiousness

Lesson: You must Have a high standard

ADEOGUN, FUNMILOLA OLUWATOSIN LECTURES ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT TITLED THE THREE SERVANTS (Part 12)

Remember the lesson in part 11 is ‘You must have a High standard’

In fact, the Holy Quran Teaches Us to Hire Top Talent. According to Mohammed A. Faris:

*There is a well-known passage in the Quran, that describes the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) – Peace be upon him (PBUH) – and his interactions with two young women and their father.

As I was reflecting on this passage, I realized that this passage contains some powerful lessons on how to effectively hire top talent that CEOs & HR managers can all learn from.

If you’re not a Muslim – don’t worry, I’ll explain the passage below. If you’re a Muslim – turn to Chapter 28, verses 23-28 for the passages I’m quoting below.

The Story
The story begins with Musa (PBUH), after escaping Egypt, entering the town of Madyan and seeing two women struggling to water their sheep. Here’s how the Quran describes the scene:

And when he came to the well of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women driving back [their flocks]. He said, “What is your circumstance?” They said, “We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man.”

So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, “My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.”

So Musa (PBUH) offers them help, and then goes to sit under a tree making a supplication to God for some desperate help (you can imagine him hungry, tired, and has no where to go after a long travel).

A little short while after he helped the two women, one of them approaches him and invites him over to her father’s place who wants to reward him for helping his daughters. Here’s how the Quran describes the incident:

Then one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, “Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered for us.” So when he came to him and related to him the story, he said, “Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people.”

7 Practical Lessons of Hiring from Two Verses in this Story
Here’s where it gets interesting and connects to the topic of hiring top talent:

One of the women said, “O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy.”

There are 4 observations here:

Look for people with a proven CV.

The woman noticed Musa’s skills and character and Musa demonstrated both of these when he helped them out earlier in the day. When looking for top talent for our companies, we shouldn’t just hire people based on what they tell you they’ve done. Let them show you clear examples of what they’ve achieved. Even better, always be on the lookout for top talent outside your official hiring lines (e.g. at trade conferences, airport business lounges, even non-profit board).

When you want to hire somebody, start with a referral. The daughter offered a strong reference to her father to hire Musa. We all know that references are powerful ways to vet your talent and make sure that your talent truly matches their CV, but how many of us start the hiring process from referrals? Won’t it be cheaper and more effective to start the hiring process by asking for references to top talent from our immediate circles? (Yes, I’m aware this might not work for some large companies or highly competitive industries – but for small/medium businesses, this can be effective)

Skill + Character are key: Notice the two qualities that the woman mentioned to her father “strong and trustworthy”. When looking for talent, we should not always look for the most skillful, we should also look for character and trustworthiness. Skill alone doesn’t make talent. Skill + Character is the more powerful criteria. Think of developing 2 sets of questions for the interviews: one that judges skill, and the other that judges character.

Start with Skill: Having said that, notice how strength/skill was mentioned first and then trustworthiness. And this is another important lesson.

Lesson: Hire Top Talents

ADEOGUN, FUNMILOLA OLUWATOSIN LECTURES ON FINANCIAL INVESTMENT TITLED THE THREE SERVANTS (Part 13)

Remember the lesson in part 12 is ‘Hire Top Talents.’

Successful investing is a journey, not a one- time event, and you ‘ll need to prepare yourself as you are going on a long trip.
The master in the parable of THE THREE SERVANTS also gives us insight into the two parameters used in allocating capital:

1. The first parameter is potential. Master allocated money to the servants according to their potential capacities and abilities, not according to sentiments.

If you don’t develop your potential in business management, no master will allocate capital to you.

Attend seminars, read business books, learn to read financials, business journals, watch business TV, familiarize yourself with the technical jargon of free markets, develop your potential, take investment course that deals with modern financial ideas, read books such as Stocks for the Long Run by Jeremy Siegel et al.

Investment is a combination of science (financial fundamentals) and art (qualitative factors).

The scientific aspect of finance is a solid place to start and should not be ignored.

Lesson: If you don’t develop your potential in business management no master will allocate TREASURE to you.

LAW WEEK: ‘SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER ON INSECURITY,’ ISAAC OGBAH URGES NBA BENIN

ISAAC OMUTA OGBAH, FICMC, 3RD VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE OF THE NBA WISHES THE ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP AND PIUS OIWOH, ESQ. LED EXECUTIVE OF THE NBA BENIN BRANCH, POPULARLY REFERRED TO AS THE LION BAR SUCCESS IN THEIR 2022 LAW WEEK.

Your choice of theme is very much commendable, considering the insecurity challenges that has bedeviled this nation for over a decade.

There is no doubt the fact that SECURITY IS REALLY A PANACEA TO NATIONAL GROWTH, not only in Nigeria but globally.

Hence the lack of political will and body language by the governments of the past and most especially the present federal and state administrations has made one to begin to wonder whether or not they really know the very essence of their being in office, which is basically the protection of lives and properties and the provision of basic amenities and polices that would make life meaningful in Nigeria unlike the present day realities which has made Nigeria to be a hellish place to live in on earth.

I implore the leadership of the Lion Bar and all the panelist and participants to be bold enough to speak the truth to everyone saddled with providing security for the nation and ensure that they come alive to their responsibilities. Your voices must be heard loud and clear.

I celebrate you all now and always. Shalom shalom.
