Presidential candidate in the recent Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Elections, Olumuyiwa Akinboro SAN has told CITY LAWYER that he may levy a lawsuit over the outcome of the elections.

CITY LAWYER recalls that Akinboro had rejected the outcome of the election as declared by the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), saying that he and his numerous supporters were denied an opportunity to vote.

According to him, “The events surrounding this election have reinforced the urgent need for meaningful electoral reform. My reflections are offered in the hope that this moment will inspire the changes necessary to restore confidence in our democratic processes.”

A prominent supporter of Akinboro and former NBA President, Mr. Joseph Daudu SAN, had also pooh-poohed the outcome of the election, asking ECNBA to conduct a fresh election for 70 percent eligible voters who he claimed were disenfranchised during the election.

In an interview with CITY LAWYER today, Akinboro stated that he is “still consulting” on the way forward, adding that he may also file a petition before the APpeals comiittee.

His words: “I am still consulting. If I decide, I may file an appeal. I may also decide not to file any appeal and walk past it.”

When CITY LAWYER told the former NBA General Secretary that it is in receipt of a notice by the Nigerian Bar Association National Officers Election Appeals Committee (NBA-NOEAC) saying that the deadline for petitions closed yesterday, he stated that he is yet to see or receive such a notice.

He stated that he is “not bothered by the notice,” adding ominously that “There are so many ways to kill a monkey.”

Asked whether he planned to litigate the outcome of the election, the senior lawyer stated that he is exploring several options on the matter.

His words: “One of the options is to jump and pass and move on. I can leave it for all concerned. Everyone has seen what happened. What do I want to prove?”

He however added: “If I decide to go to court, that is an option. If I decide not to go to court, that is also an option.”

CITY LAWYER recalls that Badejo-Okusanya was declared winner of the presidential election by the electoral committee. She polled 12,317 (47.18%) to defeat her closest rival Akangbe who polled 7,934 votes (30.39%) to emerge runner-up. Akinboro garnered 5,855 votes (22.43%) to place third in the three-horse race.

Meanwhile, Akangbe has filed a petition before the Appeals Committee challenging the outcome of the election.

Aside from Akangbe, impeccable sources told CITY LAWYER that the candidate for the position of Welfare Secretary Chinwendu Ugochukwu is also challenging the return of Audrey Chinelo Ofoegbunam as the duly elected candidate.
