ANTHONY KILA: LET THE TRUTH COME OUT, BUT PLEASE, LET US NOT LOSE A HUMAN LIFE
There is something about the Anthony Kila controversy that has begun to worry me beyond the allegations themselves.
I have followed the unfolding events with concern, but what worries me most is the possibility of what this public humiliation might mean for the man at the centre of it all.
We are watching a controversy unfold around a man whose academic credentials, professional standing and public reputation are now under intense scrutiny. The allegations are serious, and the questions they raise deserve answers. But beyond the headlines, the investigations and the arguments on social media, there is a human being who must live through this experience.
I do not know Anthony Kila personally enough to claim knowledge of what he is going through privately. I also have no intention of prejudging the allegations against him. The facts must be established, questions must be answered, and accountability must follow wherever wrongdoing is proven.
But I am worried about the human being behind the headlines.
We live in a society where we can be merciless when someone falls from a position of honour. Yesterday, people celebrated their achievements. Today, the same public can turn their names into jokes, their past into ammunition and their present difficulties into entertainment.
We rarely stop to consider what such a sudden reversal might mean to the person experiencing it.
I remember the tragic case of Andy Jason, whose death also raised painful questions about the human cost of public controversy. I am not suggesting that Anthony Kila’s circumstances are the same, or that we know what he is thinking. I simply do not want us to ignore the possibility that a person’s private suffering may be far greater than anything visible on social media.
PLEASE, LET THOSE CLOSE TO ANTHONY KILA CHECK ON HIM.
Let someone call him, visit him if possible, sit with him and genuinely ask how he is coping. Let those who care about him ensure that he has the support he needs during this difficult period.
This is not a call to suppress the truth. It is not a demand that journalists stop investigating or that anyone abandon legitimate questions about academic integrity.
It is a reminder that accountability and compassion are not enemies.
If the allegations are established, the consequences must follow. But we must never become so consumed by the desire to expose another person’s failings that we forget the value of the person whose failings we are discussing.
No academic title is worth more than a human life. No public reputation is beyond scrutiny, but no controversy should make us indifferent to the possibility of human suffering.
Anthony Kila may have questions to answer. For now, I hope the people around him will remember that there is a human being behind the controversy, and that he deserves to be treated as one.
Let the truth come out. Let justice take its course. But let us not lose our humanity in the process.
