In this interview with CITY LAWYER, respected senior lawyer and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference (NBA-AGC), Mr. Ikeazor Akaraiwe SAN gives first-ever insights on LOC preparations for the eagerly awaited event, saying that no effort has been spared to give conferees a memorable conference experience.

Briefly tell us about yourself, Sir.
My name is Ikeazor Akaraiwe. Born August 29, 1962. Called to the Bar, 1985 and to the Inner Bar 2021. Married to Professor of Opthalmology Nkiru Akaraiwe, with six children – one doctor, two lawyers, one architect, one mass communicator, and one trainee pilot. One-time 1st Vice-President, NBA, One-time alternate chair SPIDEL, seven-time Chief Rapporteur NBA and one-time Chair, NBA Enugu branch.

How did you receive the news of your appointment as LOC Chairman?
It was not quite surprising. I was chair, LOC for the NEC of November, 2024 (the first NEC in Enugu in 15 years).

How has it been since your appointment? Rosy or rough?
This is the first annual general conference in 22 years in Enugu. Let it never be forgotten that all hosts of NBA conferences know that they are to host about one year before. However, Enugu only got to know only four (4) months before August 2025, because it was shifted from Port Harcourt. Within four months, we have faced many challenges, but by the grace of the Lord, we have emerged victorious.

Tell us about preparations for the AGC. Is Enugu ready?
Enugu will be the surprise of the nation. Enugu is the prettiest city in Nigeria, and she is ready.

Are there shuttle arrangements to transport conferees on arrival from airports and motor parks?
Yes, there is.

Is there any transport arrangement to ferry conferees from their hotels to the conference venue?
Our governor, great guy, has done a yeoman’s job. He has only this August introduced brand new CNG buses to the entire state. About 10 to 15 CNG buses have been dedicated to the conference.

There is this rumour surrounding lack of adequate hotels for conferees. How true is this?
There are enough hotels. Besides, many Airbnbs and apartments have come into play.

Will lunch be adequate for the entire duration of the conference?
Lunch will be more than adequate both at the Friendship Centre and the Mammy Market.

Talk to us about security in Enugu, especially as it relates to the Monday sit-at-home. Is it still observed?
That economically self-defeating and politically nonsensical sit-at-home every Monday was smashed by Governor Peter Mbah as soon as he was sworn in as Governor in 2023.

How will you describe the ambience of the conference venue?
This is the best conference venue in the country. Seeing is believing.

Are there any delicacies to look forward to?
Enugu is home to some of the best and nutritious culinary delicacies ever invented by mankind. From akidi to okpa to abacha to palm wine. If a trial does not conceive you, it will convince you.

Will conferees be opportune to visit some tourist attractions?
Yes. From rural waterfalls and caves to urban tourist sites, Enugu is waiting.

Are there any fun activities or side attractions to look forward to?
The football tournaments are already on. The tourist attractions are waiting. The city is beautiful. The people are hospitable.

What should conferees expect in Enugu?
Peace and Tranquility
