A new scholarly work aimed at deepening the understanding of Nigeria’s criminal justice system has been published by Professor Olugbenga Akingbehin, a renowned academic and Professor of Public Law and Criminology at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Titled “Sentencing and Treatment of Offenders Law in Nigeria,” the book is presented as one of the first comprehensive textbooks in Nigeria devoted exclusively to the law of sentencing and the treatment of offenders.

The publication comprises 15 chapters and provides an extensive examination of the principles, theories, and practice of sentencing under Nigerian law. The author explains that the book is the product of more than two and a half decades of teaching, research, and practical engagement in criminal law, criminology, sentencing, and offender rehabilitation.

The book explores the theoretical foundations of sentencing law and the practical application of sentencing principles in Nigeria. It discusses the sources of Nigerian sentencing law, the objectives of punishment, and key principles such as proportionality, rationality, and fairness in sentencing. It also examines the factors that courts consider in determining appropriate punishment, including mitigating and aggravating circumstances.

Beyond sentencing, the publication devotes significant attention to the treatment of offenders. It reviews both institutional and non-institutional methods of offender rehabilitation and correction, while also examining penology and contemporary approaches to criminal justice administration. The author presents these subjects with a comparative outlook, making the book relevant to current developments in criminal justice practice.

The publication is intended to serve a broad audience within the legal and academic communities, “it is designed as a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of criminology and criminal justice, law students studying criminal litigation, legal practitioners, judicial officers, researchers, and professionals working within Nigeria’s penal and correctional system. It is also expected to assist magistrates and judges in the discharge of their sentencing responsibilities.”

The book is published by Princeton & Associates Publishing Co. Ltd., further expanding the body of contemporary Nigerian legal literature on criminal law and justice administration.

The author, Professor Olugbenga Akingbehin, is an accomplished legal scholar with an extensive academic and professional background. He obtained his Bachelor of Law degree in 1989 from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1990. He later earned both Master of Laws and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Lagos. He commenced his academic career in 2000.

Professor Akingbehin currently serves as Professor of Public Law and Criminology and Head of the Department of Public Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.

Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to legal scholarship through numerous books and journal publications. He is also a member of both the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the International Bar Association (IBA).

The book further highlights Professor Akingbehin’s international academic engagements, including participation in conferences and research programmes in Denmark, Scotland, Canada, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. He has served as a visiting scholar at leading international institutions and has held appointments as a research fellow, external examiner, and Chief Examiner for professional bodies and legal education institutions in Nigeria.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Akingbehin has contributed to law reform and public service. The publication notes that he is a Notary Public of Nigeria and currently serves as a consultant to the House of Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, reflecting his active involvement in national legal development.

With its detailed treatment of sentencing law and offender rehabilitation, “Sentencing and Treatment of Offenders’ Law in Nigeria” is expected to become an important reference for legal education, judicial practice, criminal justice administration, and policy development in Nigeria. The publication fills a significant gap in Nigerian legal literature by providing a comprehensive and dedicated text on an area of law that continues to shape the administration of criminal justice across the country.
