Federal Capital Territory Minister and former Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has stirred fresh controversy within Nigeria’s legal community following his comments on the election that produced Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya as President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Wike, while speaking about the NBA presidential election, disclosed that he did not support Badejo-Okusanya’s candidacy despite having been approached by her during the campaign.

According to the minister, Badejo-Okusanya had personally visited him and sought to know why he was not backing her ambition to lead the country’s foremost professional body for lawyers.

Wike said his decision was influenced by the people surrounding and supporting the candidate, describing some of those backing her quest as “traders.”

The statement has generated considerable interest because of the influential personalities traditionally associated with NBA elections and the intense competition that often surrounds the race for the association’s presidency.

The former governor also appeared to question the motives and interests of some individuals involved in the election, suggesting that their involvement was not necessarily driven by the broader interests of the legal profession.

His remarks are expected to reignite discussions among lawyers and stakeholders about the role of influential political figures, senior members of the Bar and other power brokers in NBA elections.

Badejo-Okusanya emerged victorious in the NBA presidential election, making history as the second woman to occupy the position. Her victory was widely regarded as a significant moment for women’s representation and leadership within the Nigerian legal profession.

However, Wike’s latest comments have added another dimension to the story, particularly because of his own influence in Nigerian politics and his longstanding relationships with prominent members of the legal community.

The minister did not, in the remarks publicly reported so far, name the individuals he was referring to as “traders.”
