NBA PRESIDENCY 2026: WILL EGBE AMOFIN’S SATURDAY PARLEY SPARK CONSENSUS CANDIDATE?

NBA PRESIDENCY 2026: WILL EGBE AMOFIN’S SATURDAY PARLEY SPARK CONSENSUS CANDIDATE?

Egbe Amofin Oodu’a, the influential regional bloc for lawyers of Yoruba extraction, is set to discuss the forthcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Elections.

According to a statement made available to CITY LAWYER, the meeting which is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the Aare Afe Babalola (NBA Ibadan) Bar Center, will discuss “NBA 2026 General Elections” as an agenda item.

While it is the turn of the Western Zone (comprising the South West States as well as Delta and Edo States) to produce the next NBA President, the South West has lately been upstaged by the Mid-West States due largely to its inability to forge consensus.

Some NBA political watchers argue that history may repeat itself during next year’s presidential election as no less than four aspirants from the South West are set to square up with two aspirants from the Mid-West.

Among the aspirants from the South West who are gunning for the NBA Presidency are Mr. Muyiwa Akinboro SAN, Mr. Yemi Akangbe SAN, Prof. Foluke Daramola and Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya.

On the other hand, Midwest aspirants who have confirmed their intention to contest for the NBA Presidency to CITY LAWYER are former NBA First Vice President, Mr. John Aikpokpo-Martins and immediate past NBA Third Vice President, Mrs. Amanda Demechi-Asagba.

Analysts have argued that aside from possibly agreeing on a consensus candidate, one of the best strategies for Egbe Amofin to ensure that the NBA presidency returns to the South West is to hammer out a sharing formula with its Midwest neighbours.

With barely one year to the next NBA presidential election, some analysts have argued that the Egbe Amofin Oodu’a may face an uphill task in getting all its presidential aspirants to agree on a consensus candidate, moreso as the aspirants have staked their reputations and made sundry commitments to stakeholders, to say little of the huge financial expenses already incurred by the aspirants.

CITY LAWYER observes that one of the major challenges that beset previous efforts to forge consensus was the divergent interests of key Egbe Amofin leaders who were bent on forcing their choice aspirants on the entire bloc, leading to resistance and the resolve of each aspirant to try their luck at the poll.

It remains to be seen whether the relatively new leadership of the bloc will be able to manage these tendencies and hammer out a consensus arrangement, moreso as time is not on the side of the aspirants.
