Distinguished Colleagues,

On 13 June 2024, I provided an update on the steps that the NBA-SARC had taken since receiving information regarding the arrest and detention of our colleague Pius Awoke, Esq. This included a meeting that was held in Abuja on 13 June 2024 between the NBA-SARC and the Director of Legal of the DSS.

I also reported that the NBA President had assured the NBA-SARC that he was working behind the scenes to secure the release of Pius Awoke, Esq.

At the meeting of the National Executive Council of the NBA which held in Abuja on Thursday, 20 June 2024, I informed the members of NEC, while presenting the report of the NBA-SARC, of the steps that the NBA-SARC was taking and the efforts the NBA President was making to secure the release of our colleague.

The NBA President also informed the NEC that his engagement with the relevant authorities had reached an advanced stage and that Pius Awoke, Esq. would be released at any moment.

I am delighted that the NBA President has secured the release of our colleague and Mr. Oyinba Emmanuel Chinonso, who also has been held with Mr. Awoke since 2021.

I thank Mr. President for his efforts. I also thank all the members of the NBA-SARC, especially the Director of Legal of the DSS, Mr. Usman Neva Dauda for all their efforts.

The NBA-SARC will continue to discharge its mandate of intervening to ensure that lawyers and indeed all Nigerians carry out their businesses in a safe environment devoid of harassment, intimidation and assault by security agencies.

The NBA-SARC will reach out to our colleague in the coming days (we want to allow him some family time given his ordeal) to get the full picture of his travails and what led to it. We will issue a further update thereafter.
