NBA IKEJA TO HOLD ‘LET THE POOR BREATHE’ PROTEST MARCH TOMORROW
All is now set for a peaceful march by members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch to protest biting economic hardship in the country.
In a statement made available to CITY LAWYER, the branch noted that the march is tagged “LET THE POOR BREATHE.”
According to the statement personally signed by the Branch Chairman, Mr. Seyi Olawumi, the march is aimed to draw attention to the “stifling economic policies” of the Federal Government.
The march will start at 10 am from the NBA Ikeja Bar Centre and terminate at Alausa, the seat of power in Lagos State. The branch is expected to present a protest letter to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for transmission to President Bola Tinubu.
A notice seen by CITY LAWYER reads:
“Dear colleague,
“The Branch will hold a peaceful march against ‘stifling economic policies’ to Alausa Secretariat tomorrow, 5/11/24.
“Take-off time is 10 am prompt from the Bar Center.”
NBA Ikeja Branch, popularly called “Tiger Bar” due to its activist and people-centered disposition, has a tradition of embarking on marches to draw attention to pressing socio-economic and human rights issues.
CITY LAWYER recalls that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates had embarked on a similar protest in August 2023 with placards that read, “Let poor Nigerians breathe,” “End fuel price increase,” “Stop Naira devaluation,” and “Fix local refineries” among other demands.
President Tinubu had removed fuel subsidy immediately after he was sworn-in as Nigeria’s President, leading to a three-fold jump in the pump price of fuel. The inflationary spiral has continued to cause pain and hardships for many Nigerian households.
