ANXIETY OVER ENERGY EXPERT, LUCIUS NWOSU SAN

There are strong indications that leading oil and gas lawyer, Mr. Lucius Nwosu SAN is dead.

A post on his University of Nigeria Enugu Campus 1976 alumni platform obtained by CITY LAWYER read: “BREAKING… Am distressed and in tears. Why do such things happen?! Can’t still believe it that Papa Doc is gone to the great beyond. He passed this morning. Hate to be a bearer of bad news. Na so we see am.”

Another post read: “LUCIOUS (sic) NWOSU SAN, may your soul rest in peace.” It would seem that his classmates nicknamed him “Papa Doc.”

A source who is a classmate of the fiery lawyer confirmed the sad news to CITY LAWYER , saying the news was originally broken by a judge who is also a classmate of the foremost oil pollution claims expert allegedly nicknamed “Lucifer Nwosu” by international oil companies for being a thorn in their flesh in his many legal battles for compensation for polluted oil-bearing communities.

He said that the news broke yesterday of Nwosu’s passing, adding that it was not until today that the news was confirmed. He stated that three members of the class have been mandated to visit his beloved wife.

Nwosu was lately entangled in a face-off which wrought a crisis within the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), leading to the resignation of its chairman and two members due to alleged meddlesomeness by the Body of Benchers.

This also led him to petition the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mr. Olumide Akpata in a letter dated February 17, 2022 urging him to impress on leading lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN “to refrain from bidding for the Chairmanship of the Body of Benchers failing which, the Bar should politely withdraw his candidacy.”

Continuing, he wrote in the four-page letter: “Mr. President, I do not have anything to gain or lose personally by Chief Olanipekun SAN remaining in or becoming Chairman of the Body of Benchers, but I would rather not be your goodself as president and alter ego of the Nigeria Bar Association, when this tragic circumstances will be ascribed to your tenure. Hence this urgent note of caution.”

It was unclear whether Akpata responded to Nwosu’s petition. However, the Body of Benchers brushed aside the controversy to elevate Olanipekun to the position of Chairman of the elite body.

GADZAMA VISITS UNIMAID VC, URGES YOUNG LAWYERS TO SPECIALIZE

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, University of Maiduguri Alumni Association, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN and Executives of the association have visited the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba.

During the visit, Gadzama praised Prof. Shugaba for his quality leadership at the institution and reiterated that the alumni association will continuously support the university.

The National Secretary of the Association, Mrs. Afiniki Hananiyah thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the entire management for restoring the glory of the university especially as it relates to the empowerment of the female gender.

The Association presented an award of service to the Vice-Chancellor in recognition of his meritorious service to the University. The delegation also made a stop-over at the Faculty of Law of the university among others, and were by the Dean of Law, Prof. B. A. Bukar.

Gadzama and Hananiya who are both graduates of the faculty pledged to galvanize all law alumni as well as their friends and well-wishers to contribute towards repositioning the Faculty for greater performance and sustenance of its pride of place in the academic community.

Meanwhile, Gadzama has urged lawyers to specialize and do what is best for their careers.

Speaking at the recent Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch, the leading lawyer who is also the Chairman of the Mentoring Committee of the Body of Benchers, advised young lawyers to decide what they want to do early on in their careers.

Gadzama who was Chairman of the Young Lawyers’ Session of the Law Week said it was imperative for a lawyer in the new age to specialise in a particular area and pursue whatever goals the practitioner has set out in life notwithstanding the obstacles that may present itself.

Held at the Abuja International Conference Centre, the session’s topic was “The making of a successful legal practitioner.” The panelists included Kehinde Ogunwumiju SAN, Oyetola Muyiwa Atoyebi SAN, Dr. Agada Elachi, Prince Chukwudi Oli and Dr. Sunny Kayode.

The panelists made crucial interventions which anchored on the need for young lawyers to be industrious and imbibe the culture of hard work, passion and continual self-development. Oli, in his remarks, emphasized the need for mentorship, adding that Gadzama provided the much required mentorship which he needed in his career to succeed when he worked in his law firm.

BAR LEADERS PROFFER ROADMAP FOR LAW SCHOOL, LEGAL PROFESSION

Bar leaders and academics at the weekend stressed the need to leverage alumni networks for the development of legal education and law practice.

Speaking on the theme, “Alumni Networks and the Development of the Legal Profession in Nigeria” at a virtual conference hosted by the Nigeria Law School Class of 1989, a leading presidential candidate in the forthcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Elections, Dr. Babatunde Ajibade SAN, made a strong case for the transformation of the Nigerian Law School Alumni Network into a world class framework.

Citing Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford university alumni as examples, Ajibade observed that alumni networks have been able to deploy huge human and material resources to boost the development of their alma mater, adding that “the situation should not be different for the Nigerian Law School that has produced distinguished personalities rendering invaluable services to humanity across the globe.”

The Chairman of the Counsel of Legal Education (CLE), Chief Emeka Ngige SAN, commended the management of the Nigerian Law School for deploying e-learning facilities to avoid interruption of lectures despite the COVID-19 pandemic. He also applauded the Nigerian Law School Class of 1989 for the e-learning platform donated to the school, adding that it would “go a long way to enhance remote learning for Nigerian Law School students.”

The Secretary to the Council of Legal Education & Director of Administration, Nigerian Law School, Mrs. Elizabeth Max-Uba enumerated the needs of the campuses of the school and appealed to the different alumni classes to help reposition the Law School campuses as befitting academic environments for the training of lawyers.

Speaking in the same vein, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Professor Isa Chiroma SAN urged alumni classes to “come to the aid of the Nigerian Law School in order to restore its lost glory.”

Contributing to the discourse, Mr. A. U. Mustapha SAN advised the coalescing of all Law School alumni classes into a single and formidable alumni association to enable better management and communication. He stated that this would spur the growth of the institution.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Law School Class of 1989, Mr. Emeka Albert explained that the soon-to-be-rolled-out multi-dimensional e-platform built by the Class includes an Alumni module that enables alumni members to engage and interact.

According to the leading justice sector reform consultant, “Lawyers need only to register with their call year and the system will group members according to year of call, making it possible for members to engage with their classmates and organise themselves into alumni associations just like the Class of ’89 and a few other Classes have done.”
