NBA BRANCHES TO SPONSOR 100 YOUNG LAWYERS TO SPIDEL CONFAB

The eagerly awaited 2022 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) received a major boost at the weekend as five NBA branches based in Abuja have agreed to sponsor 100 young lawyers to the conference.

Though the annual conference was originally billed to hold in Sokoto, it was postponed due to the uncertainty surrounding the killing of Miss Deborah Yakubu. The conference will now hold at NBA HOUSE, Abuja from 3rd to 5th August, 2022. The theme of the conference is “The Undermining of Judicial Authority in Democracy.”

According to the Alternate Chairman/LOC Chairman, Dr. Princess Frank-Chukwuani, the branches that made the joint pledge at the recent Local Organising Committee (LOC) meeting are Abuja, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Nyanya/Karu and Garki.

Chukwuani noted that palpable excitement has enveloped the branches since the news of the sponsorship broke, adding that “It is our own way to promote public interest advocacy among young lawyers and ensure that we continue to populate the body of lawyers who are poised to defend human rights and rule of law in Nigeria.”

Many A-list speakers have confirmed attendance at the conference, even as Supreme Court jurist, Justice Inyang Okoro will deliver the Keynote Address.

The CPC has former NBA Lagos Branch Chairman, Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom SAN as Chairman with Mr. Kunle Adegoke SAN as Alternate Chairman and Dr. Princess Frank-Chukwuani as Alternate Chairman/LOC Chairman.

NBA-SPIDEL CONFAB MOVED TO ABUJA, HOLD AUG. 4 & 5

The yearly conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) earlier scheduled to hold in Sokoto State last May has been moved to Abuja. The annual conference will now hold on August 4 and 5, 2022.

CITY LAWYER recalls that the conference was postponed indefinitely due to security concerns that trailed the murder of Lady Deborah Yakubu by suspects over an alleged blasphemy.

According to a statement made available to CITY LAWYER, “After a careful consideration, the Executive of NBA-SPIDEL has chosen the 4th and 5th of August 2022 for the Conference at the NBA National Headquarters, Abuja with the theme: THE UNDERMINING OF JUDICIAL AUTHORTIY IN DEMOCRACY.”

The Keynote Address for the Annual Conference will be delivered by HON. JUSTICE INYANG OKORO while the Attorneys-General of Lagos State, Abia State and Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN have all confirmed their attendance to the conference as Resource Persons.

The first day is 4th of August, 2022. It is going to be a plenary with the topic: “Disobedience to Court Order – A Call to Anarchy”. This will be followed by the afternoon session.

Day Two will dissect the topic: “The Impediments to Seamless Execution of Court Order in Nigeria – Any way out? CHIEF MIKE OZEKHOME SAN is the Lead Speaker.

The afternoon session will witness a special programme involving Law Pavilion and Nigeria Human Rights Commission. The Chairman of NBA-SPIDEL, Dr. Monday Ubani will coordinate the Law Pavilion session in conjunction with the organization while National Human Rights Commission programme will be coordinated by Dr. Uju Agomoh in conjunction with the commission.

Full programme details will soon be unveiled by the Conference Planning Committee (CPC).

The two-day conference will parade judges, notable lawyers, legislators, politicians and other public interest stakeholders.

NBA-SBL CONFAB TO X-RAY DEVELOPMENTS IN BIZ LAW

The forthcoming 16th Annual International Business Law Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) in July will focus on recent developments in the Nigerian business law environment and how they have shaped or affected business operations in the country, a statement by the organisers has indicated.

The conference is scheduled to hold from Wednesday, 20th to Friday, 22nd July, 2022 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital.

Themed “Recent Developments in the Business Law Environment”, the conference will seek to dissect some recent developments in the business law environment, how they have affected businesses, and proffer the way forward to enable businesses to thrive, according to a note issued by the NBA-SBL 2022 Conference Planning Committee (CPC).

It is understood that businesses operate within an environment and whatever happens in the business environment affects businesses and determines whether they thrive or fail.

Theodora Kio-Lawson, Chair, Media, Publicity & Mobilisation Subcommittee of the CPC, said the discussions at the conference will cut across sectors, from oil and gas to finance, tax administration, tech, and the business of law, among others.

A programme schedule made available to CITY LAWYER shows that there will be 11 plenary sessions, with sub-themes including “The Petroleum Industry Act – Making it Work”; “AfCTFA – The Prospects for the Nigerian Business Lawyer”; “CAMA 2020: The Journey So Far”; “Tax Administration Strides and the Nigerian Business Environment”; and “ESG and the Nigerian Business Environment”.

Others are “The Regulation of Over-The-Top Services: Necessity or Overreaching?”; “The Nigerian Startup Bill – Economic enabler?”; “In-house & External Counsel Relationship – New Trends and Expectations”; “The New Face of Competition – Merger Control in the Nigerian Context”; “The Business of Law – New Frontiers, and Succession”; and “Tackling the Challenges of Ponzi Schemes: Insolvency as a Resolution Tool”.

Kio-Lawson said the NBA-SBL is assembling a distinguished faculty of knowledgeable speakers and resource persons from within and outside Nigeria to discuss these issues.

The NBA-SBL Annual Business Law Conference has, since its inception in 2004, continued to provide a platform for stakeholders in the Nigerian business environment to address the issues that affect the business environment as well as businesses operating within the environment. Over the years, the conference has explored themes that include “Bringing Down the Barriers: The Law as a Vehicle for Intra-Africa Trade”; “Growth, Investment and Employment: Beyond Rhetoric”; “Re-tooling Business for Change: Leveraging the Tech Explosion”; “Law and the Changing Face of Legal Practice”, among others.
