GADZAMA STORMS NBA CALABAR, UYO BRANCH LAW WEEK

The Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch popularly christened as the Doyen Bar of the NBA held its Annual Law Week recently with the theme, “We the People: An Agenda for National Consciousness”.

Speaking on the theme of the Law Week, the Chairman of the NBA Securities Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC), Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), who was represented by Nella Andem Rabana (SAN), described security and education as twin factors which determine the level of development in a society. He explained that a society’s advancement is proportional to the level and kind of education and security architecture prevalent in that society.

Using Nigeria as a case study, Gadzama said that the parts of the country with the most incidences of insecurity are the Northern regions which are by far the most deprived of formal education. He outlined recommendations to better the situation of the country as it relates to both security and education.

Meanwhile, the Uyo Branch of the NBA also held its Annual Law Week from the 24th of March to the 1st of April, 2022. The Law Week which was christened “The Advent of Ibom Deep Seaport and the Prospects of Maritime Law Practice in Nigeria” heralded several insightful deliberations on the need for an all-inclusive approach in the development and sustainability of a standardized Maritime practice in the country. In the course of the Annual Law Week, several ideas were posed and resolutions made towards the fulfilment of this mandate.

According to a statement, “The Law Week also had other highlights including the Annual Dinner and Sit-out session. The event indeed all-round glamorous but even more thrilling was the crowning stroke; the farewell brunch courteously organized for the illustrious patriot of the Nigerian Bar, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN.

“The Executives and Members of the NBA Uyo Branch saw to it that their ‘in-law,’ in person of the Learned Silk J-K Gadzama, SAN was given a treat to several local delicacies before bidding him farewell.

“The Learned Silk whilst thanking them for the warm hospitality reiterated his unwavering support and commitment to the affairs of the Branch and prayed that such harmony, peace and innovation continued to coexist amongst the Members and Executives alike.

“It was a memorable, enjoyable and refreshing experience for all attendees.”

BRIPAN TO PARTNER CAC, OTHERS FOR BETTER SERVICES

The Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria (BRIPAN) says it is poised to bolster its engagement with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for improved service delivery.

The newly sworn-in President of BRIPAN, Mr. Ayodele Akintunde, SAN, made the remark during the inauguration of the 2022-2023 executive members in Lagos.

Akintunde assured that the new leadership would continue to constructively engage with the regulatory agencies to ensure better synergy in the interest of its members and the country. “These engagements will help improve the customer experience of our members at the CAC and their overall experience when handling insolvency matters in the Federal High Court,” he said.

He stressed that strategic collaborations and partnerships would be the focus of the new leadership, saying: “In the past, we have partnered with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

“We have also partnered with the INSOL International (International Association of Restructuring, Insolvency & Bankruptcy Professionals), Africa Roundtable, Developmental Agencies and even CAC in the areas of training and policy development in the insolvency space in Nigeria and Africa.

“The new exco will continue to forge better relationships with these organisations as well as with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) which most of our members belong to.”

According to Akintunde, “The recognition of BRIPAN as the foremost body of business rescue and insolvency professionals in Nigeria by Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 has thrust a lot of responsibility on us and we must continue to improve the theory and practice of insolvency.

“We should jealously guard our recognition as the best trainers of insolvency professionals in Nigeria. We must all work to consolidate this milestone achievement by making BRIPAN stronger, more effective and more responsive in the business rescue and insolvency space in Nigeria.”

He said BRIPAN would not rest on its oars but will continue to engage key stakeholders such as the judiciary, CAC and SEC to facilitate the requisite reforms.

CITY LAWYER recalls that Akintunde, who took over from Prof. Fidelis Oditah, SAN as the 10th BRIPAN president is expected to be in the saddle for the next two years.

‘BE ACCOUNTABLE TO MEMBERS,’ GADZAMA URGES NBA BRANCH LEADERS

Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential candidate, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN has urged NBA branch leaderships to be accountable and display positive leadership, adding that these attributes are the life wire of the legal profession.

Gadzama stated this while receiving a delegation of NBA Gombe Branch led by its Executive Committee in his Abuja law office.

The leading arbitrator and Chairman of the Mentorship Committee of the Body of Benchers (BOB) urged the Executive Committee not to relent in its role as branch officers who are expected to continually uphold the enviable standard of ethics and prestige for which the profession has become known.

He thanked the branch leadership “for always promoting the interest of the profession and for the courtesy visit.”

In his response, the leader of the delegation and NBA Gombe Branch Chairman, Mr. Haruna Yelma said the visit was “to identify with the Learned Silk who is one of our own.”

He thanked Gadzama for the warm reception accorded the delegation and the “invaluable words of wisdom,” and urged him not to be weary in supporting the branch.

He also commended the leading lawyer “for your continuous unwavering support and immense contributions to the Branch as well as the legal profession at large.”

CITY LAWYER gathered that the delegation had “fruitful discussions” with Gadzama before they parted.
