FEATURED

IT IS WITH GREAT JOY FOR ME TO AWAKE TO THE NEWS OF MY HAVING MADE THE FINAL LIST OF THOSE QUALIFIED TO CONTEST THE FORTHCOMING NBA NATIONAL ELECTIONS

Having earlier received an email wherein the petition written against me by a fellow legal practitioner was dismissed, the news of my making the final list of those qualified to contest for the post of 3rd Vice President of the NBA crowns it all

*Once again I have no doubt whatsoever that God, who began the good works in me, will surely bring it all unto perfection *

*With all my heart ❤️ I sincerely appreciate and thank everyone of you for standing by me all these while. Special thanks to you all for all your support, counsel and prayers. I could never have gone this far without you all the way. Together we shall have cause to celebrate when the elections are finally over *

*I dedicate this victory so far to you all for your having to believe in me. You never gave up on me even in the face of the frivolous petition that was written against my person. And neither did any one of you ever stop believing in me even when the much needed email from ECNBA was delayed in coming. Surely we shall all have cause to celebrate together in the coming weeks. *

*Once again I sincerely appreciate and celebrate you all now and always *

*It shall all end up in testimonies. To God alone be all the glory *

MAXIMUS UGWUOKE DEDICATES ECNBA CLEARANCE TO SUPPORTERS

MAXIMUS UGWUOKE DEDICATES HIS CLEARANCE FOR NBA NATIONAL WELFARE SECRETARY ELECTION TO GOD AND SUPPORTERS

Ikechukwu Maximus Ugwuoke, frontline aspirant to the office of National Welfare Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association has received his notice of qualification to stand election for the position in the NBA election scheduled for July 16th 2022.

In reaction Ugwuoke has dedicated his clearance to God and to his supporters and surmised that God has the final say.

His reaction reads;

“This morning I received a notice from the Electoral Committee of Nigeria Bar Association (ECNBA) expressing their pleasure to inform me that I am qualified to stand for election into the office of
“Welfare Secretary” of NBA in the Election scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

I dedicate this clearance conveyed in this notice of my qualification which I received today 26th day of May 2022 to God who laid in my heart the desire and vision to seek and pursue an HAKUNA MATATA Regime of MAXIMUM WELFARE for the Nigerian Lawyers; And to my supporters who believe in this vision and my ability to deliver. The Mantra Maximus for Maximum Welfare coined by my supporters is gradually gaining space and shall see the light of the day. This is my honest prayer.

Having gone thus far, it is my belief that I have played my part in offering myself to serve the bar as its National Welfare Secretary and the electoral umpire has done its part of finding me worthy. Only two things are now left at this stage. First is for the bar to make a statement on this through their votes on 16th July 2022 being the election day. Second is for God to have the final say.”

NBA PRESIDENCY: GADZAMA SUBMITS NOMINATION FORM AMID CHEERS

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Security Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC), Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama SAN has submitted his nomination form and accompanying documents for the coveted position of NBA President in the forthcoming NBA National Officers Election.

A statement made available to CITY LAWYER shows that the former Chairman of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) arrived the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA) Secretariat at about 3:42 pm yesterday to submit the form in compliance with the Electoral Guidelines. The statement noted that many admirers of the leading litigator accompanied and cheered him on during the submission exercise.

According to the statement, “The Learned Silk giving his final remarks further appreciated the presence of teeming supporters and jokingly closed with a teaser, saying that, although the discussion had ended, just like the Honda Car, the discussion would continue. As usual, the jovial Bar Patriot elicited hearty laughs from all who were present amidst cheers of approval and accolades.

“Whilst exiting the premises, the Learned Silk was excused for an exclusive interview wherein he reiterated the importance of a good, all-inclusive and focused visionary leadership of the Bar.” He added that “We must live up to our roles as the watchdog of the society, the eyes of the blind, the eardrums of the deaf and the mouthpiece of the dumb. Our electoral process must set the pace and trend for the political class of our society to emulate… And this is our dream and vision, because life is not how much you acquire or own but how much impact you’re able to make on the lives of others.”

The Director-General of Vox Populi Foundation for Leadership, Chief Prince Chukwudi Oli thanked the supporters “who took out time from their busy schedules to support the vision of the Learned Silk.”

NBA PRESIDENCY: GADZAMA, MAIKYAU, TAIDI SET FOR BATTLE, SUBMIT NOMINATION FORMS

Bar Leaders, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama SAN, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau SAN and Mr. Jonathan Gunu Taidi have thrown their hats into the ring to battle for the presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the forthcoming National Officers Election, CITY LAWYER can authoritatively report.

This confirms CITY LAWYER report that the three gladiators plan to vie for the position of NBA President. The election is slated for July 16, 2022.

While Gadzama and Maikyau stormed the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA) office with a retinue of supporters, Taidi told CITY LAWYER that he went “unaccompanied.” His words: “No photos, no video, unaccompanied. For me, conduct throughout the NBA electioneering process should be a template for other professional bodies and the country.”

In an interview after submitting his Nomination Form and accompanying documents, Gadzama said: “We must live up to our roles as the watchdog of the society, the eyes of the blind, the eardrums of the deaf and the mouthpiece of the dumb.”

Accompanied by about 77 supporters, Maikyau said in a video sighted by CITY LAWYER: “You know, Sani is my imam. And so we know without a doubt, because what we brought is coming from those that are blessed and is being received by one who is blessed. There is nothing short of victory to come out of it.”

The ECNBA has set 4 pm today as the deadline for submission of nomination forms.

AKPATA DISOWNS ATTACKS ON POLITICAL OPPONENTS

Nigerian Bar Association President-elect, Mr. Olumide Akpata has warned his supporters to desist from lampooning opponents while celebrating his victory at the poll.

In a post trending on social media, Akpata chided “my supporters who have unnecessarily targeted and excoriated our colleagues for no just cause,” and warned that such attitude would detract from his quest to forge a united Bar. He noted that “a divided Bar is a defeated Bar.”

It is recalled that some senior lawyers have expressed worry at what they perceive as disrespect from juniors in relation to the recent NBA Elections. Fiery longstanding NBA Chief Prosecutor, Mr. Jibrin Okutepa SAN has penned several statements on the subject, even as CITY LAWYER yesterday reported a searing indictment of erstwhile NBA presidential candidate, Mr. Dele Adesina SAN by Akpata’s accredited agent at the elections, Mr. Aderemi Oguntoye.

The full text of Akpata’s statement is below.

Dear Colleagues,

In the last few days, I have observed with concern the rising tide of social media vitriol by a few lawyers believed to be my supporters who have unnecessarily targeted and excoriated our colleagues for no just cause. Whilst I deeply appreciate everyone who contributed to my emergence as President-elect of the NBA, I do not subscribe to showing disrespect to other people because they did not support my candidacy. Ours is a noble profession that prides itself on the high sense of discipline, learning, respect for seniority and character for which its members are reputed.

The mandate that I have from Nigerian lawyers is to work for ALL members of the Bar irrespective of who they voted for in the just concluded elections. In my acceptance speech, I made the obvious point that there is so much work to be done to revitalise our Bar and make it work for everyone without discrimination. This enormous task cannot be achieved if we continue to fan the embers of division at a time when we desperately need to unite and speak with one firm voice.

I therefore use this medium to appeal to our colleagues (both junior and senior) who supported me to show respect to seniors and peers whilst celebrating last week’s electoral victory. We must be kind, magnanimous, respectful and sensitive by our words and actions. This is because doing otherwise would be a great disservice to our vision of building a stronger and formidable Bar. The electioneering season is far behind us. Now is the time to come together because a divided Bar is a defeated Bar.

I leave you with the words of the legendary Henry Ford who said: “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”

If we truly want to make progress and ultimately succeed as a Bar, then we have a responsibility to show respect to one another and stay together as one. The time to do this is now.
