NBA-SPIDEL LAUDS UBANI AS HE CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY TODAY

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) wishes its indefatigable Chairman, Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani a very happy birthday as he adds another year today.

Dr. Ubani is a relentless human rights crusader, an unrepentant good governance advocate, an activist and social critic of note, a painstaking public interest litigator, a committed community leader and philanthropist, and an endearing family man.

He showed his mettle as a former NBA 1st Vice President, a trait he has carried into his current role as NBA-SPIDEL Chairman.

Dr. Ubani is a trailblazer and a visionary leader whose daring and can-do spirit is matchless.

The NBA-SPIDEL Council applauds you and especially your uncommon track record in the public interest and development law sphere.

Your landmark cases have opened new frontiers in public interest matters and fostered the entrenchment of human rights in Nigeria.

As you celebrate today, we pray for God’s continued guidance and protection on you. We are confident that posterity will be kind to you in your relentless pursuit of the public interest.

We wish you many more years of happiness and service to humanity.

Read below Safiya Balarabe’s message on Democracy Day celebration.

“I am pleased to wish my fellow Nigerians a happy Democracy Day celebration. I am not unaware of the myriad of man-made challenges our democracy is beleaguered with. I am however a proponent of hope and an unapologetic optimist.

To this end, I enjoin Nigerians to look beyond our present woes and behold the light at the end of the tunnel; for in the near future, we shall proudly speak of Nigeria as a place where the core values of democracy thrives.

We should keep faith alive!

DEMOCRACY DAY: ‘OUR DEMOCRACY NOW FOR HIGHEST BIDDER,’ SAYS TAIDI

Democracy Day, and 2022 is the 20th Anniversary of this Day which used to be celebrated on May 29. Democracy is well known across the world as the method of governance which insists on the active participation of the people, in cooperation with the leadership.

Democracy all over the world is a work in progress and every democratic government has its peculiar challenges as even the United States of America, acclaimed as a leading democracy, saw its Capitol (which is the equivalent of our National Assembly), invaded by anti-democratic forces barely three years ago.

Our 20th Anniversary was marked with the usual speeches, worships and fanfare, but it is hardly appropriate that we should be celebrating our return to democracy which, despite being paid for in blood and toil, has now become quite commercialised and available only to the highest bidder.

It is impossible to progress in our journey to nationhood when we perpetuate such a farce or allow our leaders take us along such a dangerous path which only benefits very few at the expense of society.

The legal profession has a vital role to play in our quest to practice the kind of genuine democracy that is worthy of celebration.

As we reflect on those issues that can reshape our country, and our part in the process, may I wish our distinguished learned colleagues happy holidays.

MAXIMUS UGWUOKE CONGRATULATES AKPATA ON WEDLOCK

Mr. Ikechukwu Maximus Ugwuoke, aspirant for the position of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Welfare Secretary and former NBA Enugu Branch Social Secretary has congratulated NBA President, Mr. Olumide Akpata on his marriage ceremony held today in Benin City.

The message reads:

” I join the legal community and the rest of the world to Congratulate you, our dear President, Olumide Akpata on the occasion of your traditional wedding with the love of your life, Osayamon Michelle Ogbebor at the ancient city of Benin today, 14th day of May 2022.

“As the Holy Book says “He that findeth a wife, findeth a good thing and obtains favour from the Lord”. This singular event of your marriage taking place towards the end of your NBA presidency tenure is a demonstration of the the fact that God’s favour that made you the number one bar man in the country had continued to sustain you to attain the greater strides and accomplishment you have so far recorded in your office, the climax of which is your tying the marital knots at this point.

SAFIYA BALARABE, NBA WOMEN FORUM TREASURER, HAILS MUSLIMS ON EID

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Women Forum Treasurer, Safiya Balarabe has urged Muslims to “hold fast” to the tenets of the Ramadan month.

Said Balarabe: “My fellow Muslim brethren, As-salaam alaikum.

“We are witnessing yet another celebration of our Islam faith, having undergone a rigorous 30-day period of communion with Almighty Allah, wherein we fasted and prayed in deep retrospect of our lives.

“Today as we celebrate the breaking of the fast, thanking Almighty Allah for sustaining us throughout the period, we should by every means hold fast the core tenets of the Ramadan period as entrenched in the teachings of the Holy Quran and championed by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This is necessary especially as our dear nation is faced with myriads of social, moral and economic problems. We as Muslims must indeed be the shining light and herald a positive turnaround for our dear nation.

“I wish us all Eid Mubarak. May Almighty Allah continue to bless and protect us all the days of our lives, Ameen.”
